NEW ORLEANS, La. - Powered by a four-run first and six strong innings from junior Matt Warren, the Creighton Baseball team claimed a 7-2 win over Tulane on Saturday, Feb. 28.
The Bluejays evened their three-game series with Tulane with the win, moving to 5-2 on the season. Tulane, meanwhile, fell to 9-2 overall.
Before Warren even went to the mound his teammates staked him to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Daniel Woodrow opened the game with a single up the middle, then fellow sophomore Nicky Lopez reached on an error. After rounding second, Woodrow was gunned down between second and third for the first out.
Creighton's batting engine, though, was up and running as the Bluejays loaded the bases on a single by junior Reagan Fowler and a walk to junior Harrison Crawford. Junior Ryan Fitzgerald drove in the first run via a single to left, then junior Brett Murray laced a two-run single into left-center. Freshman Luke Horanski capped the inning with an RBI double down the left field line.
Staked to a four run lead, Warren allowed one run in the first, then retired 13 consecutive batters to quickly move the contest to the sixth frame.
Creighton added three runs without the benefit of a hit in the sixth and Warren stranded two in the bottom half as the Bluejays took a 7-1 edge into the seventh.
Warren gave way to junior Nick Highberger following a leadoff triple in the following inning, who limited the damage to one. Highberger and senior Max Ising worked a scoreless final two frames to secure Warren's win.
Warren moved to 1-1 on the season, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings. Tulane's Alex Massey fell to 0-1, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks.
Fitzgerald and Horanski led the Bluejay offense with two hits, while Murray's two RBI paced Creighton.
Creighton and the Green Wave will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday, March 1 at 12 pm.
