Baseball Drops Heart Breaker to Tulane, 3-2

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Creighton Baseball team suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to Tulane after taking a 2-1 lead into the final frame on Sunday, March 1.
The Bluejays dropped to 5-3 on the season following the loss, while Tulane moved to 10-2 with its fourth ninth-inning victory of the young 2015 season.
Creighton fell behind 1-0 early as Tulane got a run in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single, a balk, a stolen base and an RBI ground out.
The Bluejays answered with a run in the fifth on four singles. Junior Brett Murray opened the frame with a leadoff single and moved to third on consecutive ground outs. Sophomore Kevin Connolly drove home Murray to tie the game at 1-1. Creighton, however, missed a chance to take the lead as Connolly was gunned down at the plate following back to back singled from sophomores Daniel Woodrow and Nicky Lopez.
Creighton did finally take the lead with an unearned run in the eighth as Woodrow walked, went to second as Lopez reached on an error. Fowler moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, then with two down Murray plated Woodrow with an infield single.
The Bluejays turned the game over to senior closer Max Ising in the ninth. Ising retired the first batter he faced, but a walk followed by a single allowed Tulane to pull even at 2-2. Three hitters later the Green Wave blasted a game winning hit off junior Nick Highberger with two down and the bases loaded.
Ising suffered the loss for the Bluejays as he fell to 0-1 on the season, allowing two runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Tulane's Ian Gibaut earn the win (3-1), holding the Bluejays to an unearned run on one hit and two walks in three innings of relief.
Creighton returns to action next week as the Bluejays open their home season with a three-game set against Minnesota beginning on Friday, March 7 at 3:00 pm.
