TEMPE, Ariz. – The Creighton softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to give the Bluejays an 8-5 come-from-behind win over Western Michigan following a 1-0 setback to Cal Poly to begin the day at the Kajikawa Classic Friday.
Creighton evened its record at 2-2 with the split on Friday. Cal Poly moved to 1-0 on the season while Western Michigan dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
CU senior Liz Dike came up big in the night cap versus WMU in the top of the seventh. The shortstop belted a one-out, two-RBI triple that bounced its way through the left side and rolled all the way to the left center fence to put the Bluejays up 7-5. She later scored on an RBI single by junior Blake Ringle to give Creighton the deciding three-run advantage. Dike went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored twice in the game.
Junior Michelle Trulin was the only other Bluejay to record multiple hits on the day with two. Six other Jays notched a hit against the Broncos. Creighton utilized two four-run innings to claim the win over WMU.
In the circle, sophomore Sydnee Eck started against the Broncos.
WMU's Ivy Schaaf hit home runs in consecutive at-bats to put the Broncos up 3-0 early after three complete innings.
Creighton bounced back with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
Dike opened the inning with a bloop single to center field. Ringle followed with a walk and freshman Paige Nekola came in to pinch run at first. Sophomore Jen Daro loaded the bases after a hit by pitch with no outs.
Sophomore Allie Reinhart singled to right center with one out to score Dike and keep the bases occupied. Nekola would score on a ground out by freshman Hayleigh Evans. A two-out bunt single by junior Erin McGonigal scored two runs. Daro crossed the dish easily but Reinhart forced a call at the plate and was ruled safe after the Broncos lost control of the ball on the tag.
After taking the lead CU junior Micaela Whitney came on to finish the game in the circle.
The Jays' lead did not last long as WMU posted a tying run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI off a ground-rule double to make it 5-5.
After a scoreless sixth, the Bluejays rallied with four more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the comeback victory.
Evans reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from McGonigal.
Freshman Sam Crowley came on to run at second before junior Kelsey Allender singled down the left field line to put runners on the corners with one out. A bunt single by Trulin scored Crowley to tie the game at 5-5, setting up the game-winning triple off the bat of Dike.
Whitney earned the win to move to 2-1 on the year.
In game one Whitney pitched a complete game and surrendered just five hits to Cal Poly. One of those was the game-winning home run off the bat of Amanda Sandoval as the Mustangs held on for the 1-0 victory.
