Softball Posts a Doubleheader Split with Butler to Begin BIG EAST Play

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team posted a doubleheader split with Butler in the BIG EAST opening series for both teams at the CU Softball Complex on Saturday. The Bulldogs won game one 4-1 before the Bluejays claimed the second contest 7-4.
Creighton (14-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) and Butler (13-11, 1-1 BIG EAST) ended the day close to even in the scorebook with eight runs apiece and 14 hits for CU versus 17 knocks for BU. The Bulldogs doubled up the Bluejays with six extra base hits but Creighton had more potential opportunities on the base paths with 19 left on base.
Five Bluejays posted multiple knocks on the day led by sophomore Anna O'Gorman who connected on three base hits including a two-RBI triple in game two. Junior Blake Ringle belted her fifth homer of the season and brought in three runs on the day while sophomore Allie Reinhart drilled her first round tripper of the season for the Jays.
Junior Micaela Whitney started game one in the circle against Butler.
Creighton opened the scoring in game one in the bottom of the first. Junior Michelle Trulin got on with a one-out walk. Senior Liz Dike reached on an error advancing Trulin to third. An RBI single from Ringle scored a CU run to put the Jays out front 1-0 after one.
After a scoreless second, Butler took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. A BU single, double and triple along with a CU error allowed the Bulldogs to take a 2-1 advantage.
Butler's Kristen Boros padded the lead with a solo home run in the fifth and an RBI single in the fifth to yield the final of 4-1.
Whitney dropped to 8-3 on the year with the loss that halted the Jays' win streak at nine.
Sophomore Sydnee Eck started for the Jays in game two.
Butler scored first in game two on another home run blast from Boros for a 1-0 Bulldog edge.
Creighton responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Allender opened the game with a single and Trulin advanced her with a sacrifice bunt. Ringle drilled her fifth home run of the season to clear the base and put CU up 2-1 after one.
Reinhart opened the Jays' second inning with a solo home run over the center field wall to push the Bluejays' lead to 3-1 heading to the third.
CU pushed across a fourth run in the bottom of the third. Eck came on to pinch hit with the bases loaded and was hit by a pitch to make it 4-1 in favor of CU.
After two scoreless frames, Butler closed to within one run on a two-run homer, but Creighton added three scores in the bottom of the sixth.
Dike opened with a single to left field. Sophomore Jen Daro walked before Reinhart drove in another run with a single to left center. O'Gorman ripped a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and give Creighton a 7-3 lead heading to the seventh inning.
Butler plated a run in its final at-bat with an RBI single but left two runners on before Eck and the Bluejay defense closed out the win.
Eck improved to 5-1 on the year with the victory.
Creighton concludes its BIG EAST opening series at home against Butler with a rubber match against the Bulldogs slated for 11 a.m. CT on Sunday at the CU Sports Complex.
