OMAHA, Neb. - A four-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Creighton Baseball team nipped Stetson, 6-5, on Friday, March 27.
The win extended Creighton's win streak to five games as the Bluejays moved to 13-7 overall. Stetson, meanwhile, fell to 14-13.
Creighton claimed a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings. The Bluejays first run came in an unconventional way as three walks and a hit batter gave Creighton a 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
Creighton's tally in the second saw junior Reagan Fowler deliver in the clutch with a two-out RBI single through the left side. The stage was set for Fowler with a one-out single from junior Matt Gandy, a bunt single from sophomore Daniel Woodrow and a wild pitch.
Creighton starter Matt Warren breezed through the first three innings, allowing just one hit in the first. Warren, however, hit trouble in the fourth as Stetson turned a walk, a hit batter and three hits in four runs to take a 4-2 edge.
The Hatters pushed their lead to 5-2 in the fifth with an unearned run on two Bluejay errors.
The pitches the Bluejays forced Stetson starter, Brooks Wilson, to throw early in the game paid dividends in the sixth.
Junior Kevin Connolly opened the inning with a opposite field single into left. One out later Gandy lifted a double just into short left. With runners at second and third, Woodrow continued the hit parade with the third hit to left of the inning to make it 5-3. Senior David Wiedeman saw the trend and jumped on board by pulling a ball just inside the third base line for a run scoring double.
Clinging to a 5-4 lead Stetson went to the bullpen for lefty Tyler Keller. Fowler greeted the reliever with a line shot to center that was caught, but far enough to bring home Woodrown with the tying run. The throw home allowed Wiedeman to move to third, which proved huge when junior Brett Murray beat out an infield RBI single to first base.
The one run lead was all the Creighton bullpen needed as junior Connor Miller shut down Stetson over three innings of work to earn his second win (2-0) of the season. Junior Will Bamesberger came on to get the first two outs of the ninth, while closer David Gerber recorded the final out of the game to earn his fourth save of the season.
Gandy, Woodrow and Murray led the Bluejay offense with two hits each, while Woodrow notched three runs scored.
The Bluejays and Hatters continue their three-game series on Saturday, March 28 at 2:00 pm.
