INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Behind dominant performances from junior Matt Warren and sophomore David Gerber, the Creighton Baseball squad claimed the series from Butler with a 1-0 win in the finale. The Bluejays dropped the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader, 2-1.
Following Sunday's action Creighton is 24-12 on the season and 8-3 in BIG EAST play, while Butler moved to 16-26 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
Game 1: Butler 2, Creighton 1 (7-innings)
Per BIG EAST rules, the first game of a doubleheader on "get-away day" is seven innings; as a result getting an early lead is critical. The Bluejays did just that with a run in the first on three hits and a balk. Sophomore Daniel Woodrow opened the game with a single, then moved to second straight away on a balk. Woodrow went to third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on an RBI single by junior Reagan Fowler.
Junior Brett Murray continued the Bluejay first with a single through the left side, but a liner to third by junior Harrison Crawford ended Creighton's inning as Fowler was doubled off.
The frustration of the first inning as the Bluejays did not put a runner in scoring position again until the top of the seventh. In that frame Creighton loaded the bags with two down but were unable to push across the tying run.
Starter Keith Rogalla pitched well as he limited Butler to single runs in the fourth and fifth frames, allowing just four hits and one walk in six innings. Rogalla fell to 3-1 with the loss while Butler's Peter Nyznyk moved to 3-2, allowing one run on six hits in a seven-inning complete game.
Game 2: Creighton 1, Butler 0
Returning to the traditional game in the finale, Creighton starter Matt Warren was stellar for the Bluejays. Warren scattered five hits and one walk in six innings of scoreless baseball to set the stage for the Creighton bullpen and the offense.
The Bluejays got all the offense it would need in the third as senior Kevin Lamb laced a one-out single to center and Woodrow belted an RBI triple into center.
Warren gave way to junior Connor Miller in the seventh. After retiring the first batter he faced, Miller gave up a single and walk. With two men on and just one down, head coach Ed Servais went to closer David Gerber in the seventh. Gerber responded by getting an inning-ending double play to end the threat and set down Butler in order in the final two frames to pick up his seventh save of the season.
“That was a game situation and there is no sense holding your closer for the ninth,” said Servais. “We needed to put a zero up in the seventh and if we could do that, I felt comfortable that we could close it out.”
Warren moved to 4-2 on the season with the win, while Butler's Nick Morton fell to 3-5. Morton allowed one run on five hits and three walks in eight innings.
Creighton returns home to face Nebraska on Tuesday, April 28 at 6 pm, then battles South Dakota State on Wednesday, April 29.
