Softball Drops 4-0 Decision to BIG EAST Leader St. John's

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball ended its 2015 BIG EAST home schedule by dropping a 4-0 decision to conference leader St. John's in the series finale at the CU Sports Complex.
Creighton (21-17, 6-10 BIG EAST) took one out of three games against first-place St. John's (23-14, 14-1 BIG EAST) and in the process halted the Red Storm's 15-game win streak and gave SJU its first BIG EAST defeat of the season.
The Bluejays end the weekend in a tie for sixth-place in the standings with Providence, just one game out of the fourth and final spot that qualifies for the BIG EAST Softball Championship in two weeks with one league remaining against the Friars next weekend.
The Jays managed just three hits and left seven runners on base against the Red Storm as SJU posted its second consecutive shutout to end the series.
Sophomore Sydnee Eck earned the start in the circle for Creighton.
Both teams went without a hit until the third frame and neither squad scored until the fourth inning.
SJU opened the scoring with a leadoff single and an RBI triple to jump out to a 1-0 lead. A one-out RBI single plated another run to build a 2-0 lead for the Red Storm in the fourth.
The BIG EAST leading hitter, St. John's Erin Burner, doubled the Red Storm lead with a two-run homer to left field that tied the all-time program home run record and produced the final score of 4-0.
Creighton opened the seventh with two base runners but could not push any runs across in the final at-bat of the contest.
Eck dropped to 10-8 on the year following the setback.
The Bluejays wrap up their 2015 home schedule on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Drake slated to begin at 3 p.m. CT at the CU Sports Complex. Please note that the start time against the Bulldogs has been moved up two hours from its original time slot.
