OMAHA, Neb. - Battling rain as well as the Villanova Wildcats, the Creighton Baseball team posted a 4-2 victory on Friday evening.
With the win Creighton moved to 29-17 on the season and 12-4 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova dropped to 22-27 overall and 7-10 in conference.
Moved to a doubleheader in an effort to avoid weather on Saturday, the Bluejays and Wildcats had to wait over three hours to get things started on Friday night. Once play finally began the two starting pitchers controlled the game through the four innings as the game went to the top of the fifth scoreless.
Villanova struck first in the fifth frame as Jeff Courter drilled a double to left and one out later, Emmanuel Morris plated him with a single to right. Despite giving up another double as well as a single, Creighton's Rollie Lacy limited the Wildcats to two runs.
The Bluejay offense wasted little time coming to their starter's aid in the bottom of the fifth. Senior catcher Kevin Lamb connected on a single to right-center to open the inning. One out later sophomore Nicky Lopez reached made it 2-1 with an RBI single. After Lopez stole second, junior Reagan Fowler knotted the game at 2-2 on a single up the middle. After a walk and an error loaded the bases, junior Matt Gandy bounced a two-run single up the middle to give the Bluejays a 4-2 edge.
Lacy returned to the bump for a scoreless sixth to earn the win (6-0), then the Creighton closed the door with three scoreless frames. Junior Nick Highberger set Villanova down in the seventh and eighth, then senior Jack Rogalla earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Head coach Ed Servais earned 600th career win following Friday's action.
The Wildcats and Bluejays will close the 2015 season at 10 am as Creighton will honor its seniors prior to first pitch.
