SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Behind seven strong innings from junior Matt Warren, the Creighton Baseball team claimed its 10th BIG EAST series in two seasons with a 4-2 win at Seton Hall on Sunday, May 3.
With the win Creighton is now 10-0-1 in its 11 series as a member of the BIG EAST Conference. On the season the Bluejays moved to 27-14 overall and 10-4 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall, meanwhile fell to 21-20 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
Each starter worked flawlessly into the top of the third, but senior Landon Lucansky ended the double perfect game dream with a sharp single through the left side.
With the leadoff man on first, Creighton used a little small ball. Lucansky moved to second on a sacrifice, then to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ball off the glove of Pirate shortstop Joe Poduslenko.
Creighton added to its 1-0 lead in the fourth with two runs on two hits and a second Seton Hall error. With one out in the frame, junior Brett Murray reached on an error. Junior Harrison Crawford followed with a single through the left side, then Lucansky blasted an RBI double to right center. Sophomore Kevin Connolly added a sacrifice fly to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead.
The Bluejays added another run in the top of the fifth as sophomore Daniel Woodrow dropped a singe into center. One out later junior Reagan Fowler crushed an RBI double to right-center to make it 4-1.
Warren continued to dazzle, taking a perfect game through 13 hitters. In the bottom of the fourth Seton Hall got its first base runner on a triple by catcher Tyler Boyd. The Pirate backstop came in to score before the frame was done.
Leading 4-1 after five, Warren worked two addition scoreless innings before turning the game over the game over the Bluejay bullpen. Warren earned the win (5-2) as he limited the Pirates to just one run on three hits in seven innings of work.
The tandem of junior Connor Miller and freshman Ethan DeCaster sealed the win for Creighton in the final two frames. DeCaster picked up his second save of the season with a flawless ninth.
"Matt's looking better and stronger with each outing. We needed a strong outing today from Matt and he delivered in a big way," said head coach Ed Servais.
Lucanksy led the offense with two hits (2-for-3), an RBI and a run scored.
"Landon has been a pretty good offensively player for us the last few weeks, it's simply been finding a place for him to play," notes Servais. "He had a good game for us today and we needed a lift offensively."
Creighton does not play again until Friday, May 8 as the student-athletes have final exams throughout the week. The Bluejays close out the 2015 season with seven straight home game beginning with Nevada on Friday at 6:30 pm.
