Series History:
Series with Northern Colorado tied, 3-3-1
The Bluejays and Bears have battled seven times prior to Friday's contest. Creighton posted a victory in the last matchup, 4-1, on Sept. 1, 2013. The Bluejays have faced Northern Colorado four times in Omaha, taking three of the matches. The first meeting between the two teams came in 1989, a 4-0 win for the Bears in Colorado.
First Meeting with Colorado State
Creighton has not faced the Rams prior to Sunday's meeting.
Montana Gives Bluejays Almost Everything They Wanted
The Bluejays returned from the Montana Cup with a split against Seattle (L, 3-2) and Montana (W, 1-0) last weekend. Despite the loss to the Redhawks, Creighton head coach Ross Paule was pleased with the fight and effort his team showed. Follow that with the fourth clean sheet of the year in the win at Montana and the Bluejays seem back on track.
Scouting Creighton (5-3-0)
Eight matches into the season, Creighton is approaching the close of its non-conference
schedule. Just three contests remain before BIG EAST action as the Bluejays battle two foes from Colorado this weekend, then renew an old Valley Rivalry with Drake on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Creighton has 14 goals in eight matches, but just four assists. Junior Ylenia Sachau strong leg has led the offense throughout the season, providing four goals.
Defensively the emergence of freshman Erin Scott has been a pleasant surprise. Scott has four clean sheets and has a goals against average (GAA) of just 0.76.
Scouting Northern Colorado (5-3-0)
The Bears come to Creighton following a 3-1 win on Tuesday in Wyoming. Northern Colorado has been surprisingly more successful away from home as the Bears are 3-1-0 in road and neutral contests.
Northern Colorado has nine goals through eight games, led by two from Kassy Castillo. The key to the Bears offense, however, may be Rebecca Lancia. The senior is tied for the team lead with four points, all coming on assists.
Defensively the Bears present a puzzle as senior Kaitlin Ruff and sophomore Madeline Burdick have split time in goal. Ruff has played just under 383 minutes, while Burdick has 360 minutes this season.
Scouting Colorado State (2-4-1)
Colorado State enters the weekend following a 3-1 win over Northern Colorado last Sunday. Prior to battling the Bluejays, the Rams take on Omaha on Friday.
The Rams do not have a battle in the net as junior Jesse McGinley has played all 650 minutes for Colorado State. McGinley has allowed eight goals this season, a 1.11 GAA.
Offensively the Rams are led by two goals from Hannah Gerdin and Taylor Nelson. Colorado State has been outshot 111-58 in 2015.
Richgels Approaching History
With two assists in 2015, senior Jill Richgels now has 14 career helpers. That total places her three assists shy of the Bluejay top-10. Lulu Quigley (2000-03) holds the Creighton record with 30 career assists, but four players are tied for seventh with 17 helpers.
Sachau Makes It Hurt
Junior Ylenia Sachau has made a habit of delivering in the clutch for Creighton this season. Sachau leads the team with four goals, all coming unassisted. Sachau's key to scoring is the speed of her shot. Ylenia has two goals on penalty kicks, one on a direct shot off a penalty and the fourth coming when Montana failed to clear a corner. In short, Sachau is making Bluejay opponents pay for their mistakes.
The Best Offense is a Good Defense
The two top goal scorers for the Bluejays this season are Sachau and freshman Emma Braasch, two of the Bluejays starting defenders.
Defending Morrison
Under Paule the Bluejays have thrived at home, posting a 4-1-0 record. Creighton has outscored the opposition 10-2 in Morrison stadium and has not allowed a first half goal in 2015 at home. The last time the Bluejays surrendered a first half goal in Morrison was against Villanova on Oct. 16, 2014.
Scott is Making her Claim to Morrison
Freshman Erin Scott has taken to Morrison Stadium very quickly. The native of Texas has allowed just one goal in five matches (441:27) for a 0.20 GAA.
