QUEENS, N.Y. -- The Creighton men's soccer team and St. John's played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
The No. 10 Bluejays are now 6-1-3 overall and 2-0-1 in BIG EAST action, while the Red Storm are 5-2-3 and 1-0-2 in conference play.
Creighton controlled the match during the first half, holding a 12-1 shot advantage, but the Bluejays could not find the back of the net. Andrew Withers tallied two first-half saves for St. John's to keep the contest scoreless. Creighton also had six corner kicks, while the Red Storm had only one.
Following halftime, Ricky Lopez-Espin finally broke into the scoring column with his third goal of the season to give Creighton a 1-0 edge early in the second half. During the 57th minute, Noah Franke launched a cross from the right side of the box that deflected towards Lopez-Espin near the far post. Lopez-Espin recovered the ball, kicked it off a short hop and inside the left post. Franke recorded his team-leading sixth assist on the play.
Despite the goal, momentum started to shift towards St. John's during the second half. The Red Storm kept the Bluejay defense busy and found an equalizer during the 77th minute.
Harry Cooksley sent a cross from the left side of the field into the box where Filippo Ricupati used the outside of his foot to send the ball past a diving Alex Kapp and tie the match at 1 with about 13 minutes remaining in regulation.
The match went to overtime after neither team could score a second goal before the end of 90 minutes.
St. John's finished the second half with a 9-7 edge in shots during the second 45 after Creighton held a substantial lead in that category at the half.
