Men's Soccer Takes Over First Place In BIG EAST With Victory Over No. 9 Butler

The Bluejays defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 in the battle of top-10 opponents
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 10 Creighton men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over No. 9 Butler at Morrison Stadium on Friday night to move into sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST. Â
The Bluejays improved to 7-1-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Bulldogs fell to 8-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 during conference action.
Creighton scored its lone goal during the 14th minute. Joel Rydstrand launched the Bluejays' first corner kick of the night into the box where Riggs Lennon headed the ball into the net for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.Â
The Bluejays continued their offensive pressure, firing three shots in the next five minutes.Â
Creighton forced Butler to play defense for the majority of the first half, as the Bluejays held a 9-2 advantage in shots and 4-0 in corners. Eric Dick made four saves for the Bulldogs during the opening half.Â
Butler switched the field during the second half, taking 10 shots and limiting Creighton to only two.Â
During the 54th minute, the Bulldogs had one of its best opportunities for a game-tying goal. Marco Charalambous received a pass in the middle of the box and fired a shot that went just wide of the net as Alex Kapp played off his line and had little to no opportunity for a save.
The Bulldogs also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks during the final 45 minutes, but the Bluejay defense did not allow a shot on goal.
Butler had an opportunity during the final seconds for an equallizer, but Alex Lehtinen's shot went wide of the near post as time expired.Â
Kapp recorded his sixth shutout of the season as the senior captain ended the night with only one save on the scoresheet. Butler was held scoreless for the first time since its season-opening match at Louisville (0-0 draw).Â
In a physical game, the Bluejays and Bulldogs were whistled for a combined 19 fouls and three yellow cards.Â
With the victory, Creighton improved to 5-0-1 as a top-10 team against top-10 opponents.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Tuesday for their final nonconference match of the regular season. Creighton plays at Tulsa on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
