Creighton honored its four seniors prior to Saturday's match
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Providence on Senior Night at Morrison Stadium on Saturday night.
Saturday's result marked the Bluejays' third consecutive loss. The last time Creighton lost three-straight was at the end of the 2013 season.
The Bluejays dropped to 8-5-3 overall and 4-3-1 in BIG EAST play, while Providence improved to 11-5-0 and 6-2-0 in conference action and clinched one of the top-two spots in the BIG EAST postseason tournament.Â
The Friars only goal of the night occurred during the 35th minute. Julian Gressel gave the Friars a 1-0 advantage with his team-leading 10th goal of the season following a scramble in front of the goal. Alex Kapp came off his line in an attempt to punch the ball out from in front of the six-yard line, but the ball fell to the turf and squirted past the goalkeeper and a Creighton defender before Gressel one-touched the ball with his right foot from about two yards in front of the endline.
No. 18 Creighton created numerous offensive opportunites throughout the first half, and held a 9-4 shot advantage, but could not put the ball in the back of the net. Many of Creighton's shots went wide or high of the goal, while Providence's Colin Miller made two first-half saves.Â
During the second half, neither team's defense gave an inch as both squads recorded only four shots a piece.Â
Riggs Lennon nearly had an opportunity to tie the match during the 64th minute with a free kick from just beyond the 18-yard box, but his shot went high.
With less than a minute to play, the Bluejays had a dangerous opportunity as Ricky Lopez-Espin played a ball at the top of box and sent it through a pair of defenders before Miller made his third save of the match.
Creighton ended the match with a 13-8 advantage in shots, while both teams were limited to three shots on goal.Â
In each of the Bluejays' three-straight losses, Creighton has held the edge in shots (22-5 vs. Villanova, 29-7 vs. Xavier)
Prior to Saturday's match, seniors Ricardo Perez, Myles Englis, Kapp and Lennon were honored for their accomplishments with the Creighton soccer program.Â
The Bluejays close their regular-season at home on Thursday, Nov. 3 against Georgetown (6-8-2, 3-3-2 BIG EAST). Kickoff at Morrison Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
