Creighton's inside game dominates in the second half
OMAHA, Neb. -- With its vaunted three-point attack off the mark, the No. 12 Creighton men's basketball team pounded the ball inside in the second half and cruised to a 82-52 win over Loyola (Md.) on Saturday before 16,907 fans.
The victory improves Creighton to 6-0 on the season, while Loyola dropped to 2-4.
Justin Patton led Creighton with 17 points and six rebounds, making 8-of-8 shots from the floor. He led four Bluejays in double-figures, as Marcus Foster (16), Martin Krampelj (10) and Khyri Thomas (10) also supplied an offensive lift.
Loyola (Md.) was led by 13 points from Jarred Jones, while Andre Walker contributed 12 points and five assists.
The Bluejays trailed 20-18 with five minutes left in the first half before a 12-2 burst gave them the lead for good. Foster scored the first nine points in that flurry before a Thomas three-ball gave the Jays its largest first half lead at 30-22. CU led 30-25 at the break.
The second half saw Creighton push the tempo and consistently get inside. CU made 22-of-26 two-point attempts after the break, including 7-for-7 marksmanship from Patton. CU scored the first six points of the second half to prompt a timeout after just 68 seconds, and the lead remained in double-figures for the final 17:57.
Creighton led by as much as 32 before settling for the final margin.
CU shot 55.7 percent from the floor to remain the nation's only team to shoot 50 percent or better in every game this season. CU won the rebound battle 37-29 and outscored the Greyhounds 50-26 in the paint, 28-6 off turnovers and 33-14 off the bench.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday with a 7:45 pm tip-off against Buffalo. That game will air on FS1.
