TEMPE, Ariz. - Creighton Softball split a pair of contests in Day One of the season-opening Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on Thursday. The Bluejays began the day with a 5-0 setback to eighth-ranked Tennessee, but responded with a 9-6 win over Boise State later in the day.
GAME ONE
Creighton fell to perennial power, Tennessee, 5-0, in the Bluejays' opening game of the Kajikawa Classic on Thursday.
Three Bluejays (0-1) recorded hits in the contest: Aujanae McCoy, Anna O'Gorman, and Allie Reinhart.
O'Gorman's single came in a seventh inning in which the Bluejays loaded the bases. However, Tennessee starter Erin Gabriel escaped the jam, retiring Kelsey Allender at home on a fielder's choice before recording consecutive strikeouts.
After entering the game in relief, Creighton's Micaela Whitney recorded three and two-thirds scoreless innings before allowing a pair of runs in the sixth.
The Volunteers (1-0) entered the game ranked eighth nationally. Last season, Tennessee posted a 47-17 record en route to advancing to the program's seventh Women's College World Series.
GAME TWO
Creighton's offense responded in its second showing of the day, producing nine runs on 11 hits to defeat Boise State, 9-6.
Eight of the Bluejays' hits came in the game's first two innings as Creighton tallied seven runs in the opening two frames.
Allie Reinhart followed Blake Ringles two-RBI, second-inning double with a single to left center to extend the Bluejays' lead to 7-0.
The Broncos (0-1) pushed across runs in three consecutive innings, eventually cutting their deficit to 7-6; however, a two-RBI single by Reinhart in the fifth put the game out of reach and sealed the victory for Creighton.
Freshman Michal Hylton earned her first collegiate win in the contest, pitching three innings. Sydnee Eck tossed two innings of relief, and Micaela Whitney pitched two innings of scoreless softball to earn the save.
Creighton will take on Cal State Northridge (10:00 a.m.) and UC Riverside (12:30 p.m.) on Friday in Day Two of the Kajikawa Classic.

QUOTES FROM COACH VIGNESS
"We held our own for most of the game versus Tennessee," Creighton head coach Brent Vigness said. "I was disappointed that we allowed two runs in the sixth inning, but I liked the way we bounced back in the next game. I thought it was really important after going scoreless in the first game to put up three runs in the first inning against Boise State."
