Creighton Softball Concludes Kajikawa Classic, Falls to Reigning WCC Champ BYU

Whitney strikes out seven, but Bluejays' bats silenced in 4-0 setback

TEMPE, Ariz. -Â Creighton Softball concluded play in the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday, falling to reigning West Coast Conference regular-season champion BYU.
Creighton starter Micaela Whitney held the Cougars (3-1) without a hit for the first two and one-third innings and finished with seven strikeouts; however, BYU's Olivia Sanchez recorded a complete-game shutout to lead the Cougars to a 4-0 victory.
The Bluejays (1-4) will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to take part in the Troy Cox Classic. While there, Creighton will take on Campbell, Oklahoma, Western Michigan, and host New Mexico State.

GAME RECAP
Making her first start of the season, Whitney retired BYU's first six batters in order, allowing Creighton to enter the bottom of the third frame knotted in a 0-0 tie.
Meanwhile, the Bluejays saw two batters reach base in their first three frames, with Aujanae McCoy drawing a walk to lead off the game, and Tash Coffiel recording a single to center field in the third.

Three of BYU's five runs came in the bottom of the third, with Madison Merrell beginning the inning by reaching base on a Creighton fielding error. Caitlyn Larsen then reached safely on a fielder's choice.
With Merrell and Larsen on base, Lexi Tarrow hit a bases-clearing double to right center to give the Cougars an early 2-0 advantage.
BYU's next batter, Lauren Bell, then recorded a single up the middle to score Tarrow, extending the Cougars' lead to 3-0.
Creighton saw batters reach base in each of the next two innings, with Blake Ringle earning a base on balls in the fourth and Bry Flanagan drawing a walk to start the fifth; however, the Bluejays were unable to find the scoring column.
BYU extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth when Libby Sugg hit a lead-off, solo home run to left field.
Sanchez sealed the Cougars' victory by retiring Creighton's final six batters in order. With the complete-game effort, the freshman righthander earned her first collegiate win.
