SAM HOUSTON STATE
The Bearkats (3-8) jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead following a three-run home run by senior catcher Katie Doerre in the top of the first. However, Creighton responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, as an single by Allie Reinhart scored Kelsey Allender and Aujanae McCoy.
Sam Houston State put another three runs on the board in the top of the second inning, stretching its lead to 6-2.
Creighton manufactured a solid scoring opportunity in the fifth inning following a single by Reinhart and consecutive drawn walks by Blake Ringle and Anna O'Gorman; however, a 5-2-3 double play allowed the Bearkats to escape the bases-loaded jam.
With Creighton trailing, 7-2, in the seventh Jen Daro belted a one-out home run to right field—her fourth homer of the year—to cut the Bluejays' deficit to 7-3; however, Sam Houston State retired the next two batters to seal the win.
Freshman lefthander Michal Hylton tossed five and one-third innings of relief for the Bluejays, allowing just one earned run.
NORTH TEXAS
Meeting with North Texas for the second time in as many days, Creighton flipped the script on the Mean Green, becoming the first team to defeat North Texas in its last six contests.
The Bluejays took an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the second. Reinhart led off the inning with a double and her pinch runner, senior Erin McGonigal, was then plated by back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Blake Ringle and Anna O'Gorman.
The Mean Green (8-5) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, taking a 2-1 advantage.
Reinhart doubled once more in the fourth, allowing Ringle to regain the lead for the Bluejays with a two-run, go-ahead homer.
North Texas scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead, 4-3; however, Creighton scratched across a run in the fifth to draw the score even.
The 4-4 stalemate held true through seven innings, forcing the game to head to extra innings, Creighton's first extra-inning contest of the year.
With Ringle at third and one out, Bry Flanagan drove a ball to center field that the North Texas fielder was unable to track down, scoring Ringle and putting Creighton ahead by the eventual game-winning margin, 5-4.
Righthander Sydnee Eck earned her fifth win of the season in the circle, tossing the full eight innings and striking out four. The eight-inning effort marked her team-best third complete-game outing of the season.
Creighton's victory snapped a five-game win streak for North Texas that included two victories over nationally-ranked Baylor.
"This was a much-needed victory against a really good opponent and as good a win as we've had all year," Creighton head coach Brent Vigness said. "We had so many good individual performances defensively today, with several players making great plays.
"Sydnee [Eck] threw a great game, and we continued to battle at the plate," Vigness said. "You could sense the whole game that our group felt like they were going to come back and win that game. After what happened against North Texas yesterday, I think this game said a lot about our kids and their ability to bounce back after a couple tough losses."
Creighton will return to action next weekend as they travel to Kissimmee, Fla., to compete in the Rebel Spring Games.
