Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Creighton Softball team opened play at the Rebel Springs Games with a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart and a 10-1 (5) defeat of Niagara on Saturday, March 5.
The two victories evened the Bluejays record at 8-8 on the season.
GAME 1: Creighton 4, Sacred Heart 1
Sacred Heart jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Fallon Bevino smashed a 2-2 pitch over the left-center field wall.
Creighton wasted little time responding as the Bluejays plated two in the top of the third. Tash Coffiel and Michelle Trulin got things rolling for Creighton with consecutive walks. Aujanae McCoy bounced back to the pitcher, but an error allowed the speedy Coffiel to race across the plate to knot the game at 1-1. Moments later the Bluejays brilliantly executed a double steal with McCoy drawing a throw that allowed Trulin to score.
The Bluejays added insurance runs in the fifth and the seventh, thanks in large part to Coffiel. In the fifth Coffiel singled, stole second and went to third on a grounder. Finally a single from Kelsey Allender brought her home.
Creighton's run in the seventh was once more Coffiel. This time she legged out an infield single with two down. After stealing second, Mileah McKelvey's single made it a 4-1 contest.
In the circle Sydney Eck limited Sacred Heart to one run on three hits to move to 6-3 on the season.
GAME 2: Creighton 10, Niagra 1 (5 innings)
The second game of the day saw the Bluejays push across single runs in the second and third before putting the game away with an eight-run fourth.
Jen Daro scored Creighton's first run, drawing a leadoff walk. Daro went to second on a wild pitch then moved around the bases on consecutive grounders.
Coffiel got back into the action in the third with another leadoff walk. She moved to second on a grounder and took third on Allender's single to right. Coffield scampered home moments later via an RBI ground out by Allie Reinhart.
McKelvy provided the thunder in the fourth, opening the inning with a solo home run and smacking a grand slam to give Creighton a 10-1 lead before the inning was over.
Micaela Whitney earned her first win of the year, holding Niagara to one run on six hits over five innings.
"It was nice to get a couple of wins under our belt," said Vigness. "Sydney threw the ball very well in the first game. In the second game McKelvy had a great day. I was really happy for her, we gave her an opportunity and she delivered."
The Bluejays will be back in action later for two more on Sunday, March 6 beginning at 8:00 am against Akron.
