Creighton will Face No. 4 St. John's in the BIG EAST Final on Tuesday
Chicago, Ill. -- Behind a combined 39 points from junior MC McGrory and sophomore Jade Owens the seventh-seeded Creighton women's basketball team upended No. 3 Seton Hall in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Monday, March 7.
The win vaulted the Bluejays to 17-16 on the season and more importantly into the BIG EAST Tournament Finals, where Creighton will battle No. 4 St. John's for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 pm.
Coming off a 20-point performance to lift the Bluejays past No. 2 Villanova one night earlier, McGrory picked right up on Monday. The Minnesota native delivered seven first quarter points as the Bluejays jumped out to a 13-6 lead (2:25) and took a 15-8 edge at the end of the opening period on a buzzer beating jump float shot from 10 feet by McGrory.
McGrory dropped in another bucket to open the second as the Bluejays pushed their lead to the largest margin of the afternoon, 17-8, on the opening possession. Seton Hall answered with a three-ball from Shakena Richardson. Moments later the Pirates got back within four thanks to an interior bucket from Tiffany Jones (17-13). The gap between the two teams remained near four until the final minutes. Up 23-19 with just under three minutes left in the half the Bluejays doubled the margin with back-to-back buckets from sophomore Sydney Lamberty and Owens to take a 27-18 edge with 1:48 on the clock. Two free throws from junior Lauren Works with 33 seconds left sent the Bluejays to the locker room with a 29-21 advantage.
The third quarter belonged to the Bluejays as Creighton opened the period with a 12-2 run. Owens got things cooking for Creighton with a trifecta, the next time the Bluejays had the ball freshman Audrey Faber followed suit with a trey of her own to make it 34-21 (8:37). Owens pushed the lead to 36-21 via another running jumper before the Pirates finally scratched two across the scoreboard with 7:34 on the clock. Seton Hall tried to stop the Creighton momentum with an early timeout, yet the Bluejays were having none of that. Creighton head coach Jim Flanery called a play for Faber and the Iowa native delivered on the mid-range jumper.
Seton Hall head coach Tony Bozzella was furious with what believed was a missed offensive foul and picked up a technical. McGrory easily knocked down two from the charity stripe to make it 40-23 (7:24). The Bluejay run concluded moments later as McGrory hit one of two from the line with 6:04 remaining in the period.
The Pirates switched to a pressure defense for the final five minutes of the period, but Creighton held its ground. Late in the period the Hall had whittled the margin down to 12 (49-37), but Lamberty knocked down a contested three-pointer from the right corner. Seton Hall got the last bucket of the third as the game moved to the final period with the Bluejays up, 52-39.
Seton Hall made a final push to open the fourth, getting as close as seven (52-45) with 8:16 left, but Owens and McGrory answered swiftly. Owens stopped a 6-0 Pirate run with a driving jumper and following a Bluejay defensive stop, McGrory drained a trey from the left wing to take the wind out of the Pirates' sails (57-45). Creighton went on to scored six of the next eight points, beating the Seton Hall pressure for layups from Lauren Works, Owens and two free throws from McGrory to take a 63-47 lead with 5:40 on the clock.
The Bluejays pushed their lead to as much as 25 at 76-51 (2:41) and went on to claim the 77-56 win.
McGrory led all scorers with 23 points, while Owens closed the game with a career-high 16. Faber also finished in double-figures with 11 points. Seton Hall got 20 points in the loss from Richardson.
The Bluejays moved to 4-2 in BIG EAST Tournament play, but both losses have come to the opponent Creighton will face on Tuesday night, St. John's. The Red Storm have eliminated Creighton from the BIG EAST Tournament in each of the past two seasons.
