Omaha, Neb. -- Riding high in the midst of a six-game win streak, the Creighton Baseball team faces off with Kansas and Kansas State over the next two days.
Creighton holds a 22-11 series edge on the Jayhawks, however Kansas claimed the last meeting in on March 26, 2014 by a score of 11-0. Kansas will also face the Bluejays in Omaha later this season on March 23.
Scouting the Jayhawks (2016: 3-7, 0-0 Big 12)
Kansas suffered a series sweep over the weekend at home against BYU, dropping two games by just a run. On the season the Jayhawks are 2-3 in home contests.
Kansas has committed 16 errors in the opening 10 games, leading to eight unearned runs.
The Jayhawks are hitting just .241 at the dish as a team, but Matt McLaughlin leads Kansas with a .325 average.
Creighton vs. Kansas State Series
Kansas State leads the overall series with Bluejays, 51-38-1. Creighton, however, claimed the last meeting in on March 11, 2015 by a score of 6-3. Kansas State will also face the Bluejays in Omaha later this season on March 23.
Scouting the Wildcats (2016: 7-4, 0-0 Big 12)
The Wildcats enter their game with Creighton riding a five-game win streak. After splitting four games with UC Riverside to open the year, Kansas State dropped two against Oregon State. Since that time the Wildcats are unbeaten, outscoring the opposition
75-31.
Leading the charge at the plate for Kansas State is Jake Wodtke, who is averaging .488 on the season with 15 RBI in 11 contests. Just a step back are Tyler Moore (.387) and Clayton Dalrymple (.372).
On the mound the Wildcats have given up their share of runs, entering play on Wednesday with a 5.25 ERA.
Bluejay Arms vs. Racer Bats
The weekend series with Murray State featured a renewal of the question, which is better good hitting or good pitching?
Murray State had scored 91 runs in eight games, 11.4 per game, before playing the Bluejays. Creighton, meanwhile, limited Stetson and Fresno State to one run in four of the Bluejays six games.
Over the series the Racers plated 11 runs, but the Bluejays won each of the three battles to sweep the series.
Big Innings Give Bluejays the Sweep
One key to Creighton's success in Kentucky last weekend was the Bluejays ability to pile on the runs.
After claiming the series opener 7-2, Creighton used a six-run second to claim
Saturday's game 9-4. On Sunday it was a seven-run ninth that propelled the Bluejays to a 10-5 win.
Never Say Die
Trailing 5-2 entering the top of the eighth inning against Murray State closer Cody Maerz.
Riding a five-game winning streak, it would have been easy for the Bluejays to take the series win and head for Kansas.
Instead the Bluejay bats delivered three hits in the eighth to get one run back.
Down 5-3 entering the ninth, the Bluejays got five hits and three walks off Maerz to claim the series sweep.
Senior Reagan Fowler plated the tying run with a double, while senior Matt Gandy's three-run double put the Bluejays in front to stay.
