Eck shines while offense takes advantage of Bulldog miscues
DES MOINES, Iowa --Sydnee Eck struck out 10 batters in a five-hit shutout as Creighton Softball won its fifth straight game with a 4-0 victory at Drake on Tuesday, April 12th.
Creighton improved to 23-12 with the win, surpassing last year's win total in 43 games. Drake dropped to 23-13 while falling at home for just the second time this spring.
Creighton scored once in each of the first three innings to build an early lead.
"Sydnee was really sharp," said CU head coach Brent Vigness on his junior pitcher. "From the first pitch of the game, she attacked hitters and had command of three pitches. She was locating and attacking and working ahead of hitters, and then had the ability with different breaking pitches to make them chase."
Michelle Trulin reached on an error to start the game and would score when Jen Daro's grounder was misplayed with two outs in the first. The Bluejays plated another unearned run in the second inning. Blake Ringle reached on an error with one away and pinch-runner Katie Pascuzzi would move to third following a sacrifice bunt and infield single from Tash Coffiel. Pascuzzi then scored on Trulin's single to center.
The Bluejays didn't need any help in the third inning, as Allie Reinhart led off the inning with her fourth home run of the season. It was Reinhart's third home run in CU's last four games after homering twice in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Georgetown.
Creighton added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Coffiel was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Reinhart's run-scoring single.
While the Bluejay offense was slowly pecking away, Eck (13-6) was brilliant in the circle for the Bluejays. Eck struck out the first six women she faced and eight batters in her first trip through the batting order. Her 10 strikeouts were her seventh contest this season with 10 or more punchouts, and up her BIG EAST-leading total to 155 on the spring. Eck's gem featured just one pop out to the outfield.
Kailee Smith (2-2) suffered the loss for Drake after allowing four hits and three runs (one earned) in the complete game. She struck out eight and walked one.
Creighton returns home to host Iowa State on Wednesday, April 13th at 4 pm at the CU Sports Complex.
