Bluejays with 7-4 hit advantage, but get shut out
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Creighton and Butler split a softball doubleheader on Saturday in Indianapolis as the Bulldogs won game two, 3-0. Creighton (25-16, 7-5 BIG EAST) won the first game of the day, 3-2.
Butler (24-20, 7-6 BIG EAST) scored the only runs of game two in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run home run by Kaitlin Doud. Doud's fifth blast of the season came on a full-count pitch with two outs.
Doud's home run ruined an otherwise strong performance from Creighton's Sydnee Eck, who fell to 13-8 with the loss. Eck allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six. Her six punchouts moved her into ninth place in Creighton history with 279 career strikeouts, moving her past Candi Letts and Kristan Melton.
Mikeila Boroff (8-3) pitched out of trouble all day long, scattering seven hits and striking out four without a walk. Kristin Gutierrez, who threw a complete-game in earlier in the day, came on to strike out Michelle Trulin with two on and two out in the seventh to notch her league-high third save of the season.
Trulin paced CU with a pair of hits in game two, while five teammates had one safety each.
The teams will meet on Sunday at 10 am Central in the rubber game of the series. The winning team will also claim third place in the BIG EAST standings.
