Women's Golf Wraps Up Season In Sixth Place at BIG EAST Championships

Caroline Lake and Kelsey Petersen tie for 17th place
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – The Creighton women's golf team placed sixth at the 2016 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championships on Sunday afternoon. The Bluejays shot a 995 (340+326+329) during the three-day event at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.
All-BIG EAST Second Team selection Kelsey Petersen and freshman Caroline Lake tied for 17th to lead Creighton. Petersen and Lake each shot a 247 total on the par-72 course that measured 6,166 yards. Lake led the Bluejays with a team-low 78 during the third round (84+85+78=247) to catch Petersen (85+81+81).
Seton Hall won its third consecutive BIG EAST Championship after shooting a 935 (318+303+314), becoming the first women's golf program to win three consecutive BIG EAST titles.
As the conference champion, Seton Hall earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship.
Georgetown finished runner-up with 947 (316+312+319) strokes. The Hoyas have earned runner-up status each of the past three seasons Seton Hall has taken the crown.
Xavier (313+317+320=950) placed third, followed by Butler (319+314+326=959) in fourth and St. John's (331+332+329=992) in fifth place. The Red Storm finished three strokes ahead of the Bluejays.
Xavier's Shane Crutchfield shot a 6-over par 222 and claimed the individual championship. She shot a final-round low 3-over par 75 to finish three strokes ahead of the rest of the pack. St. John's Anna Kim stroked a 225 to earn the runner-up position. Georgetown's Mackenzie Boydston placed third at 226, while Seton Hall's Karlie Zabrosky and Cassie Pantelas tied for fourth at 231.
Creighton freshman Kelsey Johnson placed 23rd while sophomore Sarah Eversman and senior Grace Yowell tied for 24th. Johnson returned to the clubhouse with a three-round 252 (85+82+85). Eversman led the Bluejays with an 80 during the second round before finishing at 254 (86+80+88). Yowell concluded her 106th and final round of her career with an 85 to end the 54-hole tournament with a 254 (86+83+85) to match Eversman.
Yowell is now Creighton's program leader in rounds played since the 2003-04 season. The McPherson, Kan., native completed her collegiate career with an 83.8 stroke average during 106 rounds (39 events).
Petersen finished the season with a team-best 78.9 scoring average, the best mark by a Bluejay women's golfer in more than a dozen years.
