Bluejays earn first league tournament win since 2004 with upset of Butler
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's tennis team made history on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over Butler in the back draw of the BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, S.C.
The victory was Creighton's first over a BIG EAST foe since joining the conference in 2013, and the the program's first at a league championship event since a win over Evansville at the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
"It was an amazing match that everyone on our team played a role in some sort of way," said Creighton coach Tom Lilly. "It's a tremendous way for our four seniors to go out, getting their first BIG EAST win. I liked the way everyone competed to the end. No one gave up. It's about as a good a way as you can end a season for us."
The Bluejays (10-10) started the afternoon with the doubles point, as Quinn Dippel and Aaron Chalstrom earned a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Spencer Lang and Adrian Mag to give CU the 1-0 lead. Alex Koca and Brooks Kendall had earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, before Butler evened the score with a 6-2 triumph at No. 1 pairs.
Harrison Lang pushed the Bluejay lead to 2-0 when he defeated Ari Gerstein (6-1, 6-3) at No. 3 singles. Butler (9-14) would answer with wins at No. 5 and No. 4 singles to even the score.
Creighton regained its advantage when Dippel took a three-set win at No. 2 singles over Mikheil Khmiadashvil, winning 6-4, 0-6, 6-0. Not long after that, Butler tied the match once again with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
All eyes then turned to No. 6 singles, where Jake Glazer outlasted Lope Adelakun in three sets to clinch the win. Glazer lost the first set (6-4) but turned the tables to win the second set by an identical 6-4 score. Glazer then won the decisive third set by a 7-6 decision, taking the tiebreaker 7-2, as he closed out the match with a service winner before being mobbed by his teammates. The win was Glazer's fourth straight this season as he closed the spring with a 9-7 singles mark.
Four Bluejay seniors closed out their Creighton careers in the win, as it marked the final matches for Dippel and August Nysted, as well as classmates Anthony Rauschenbach and Nick Thompson.
