Xavier Rallys for 6-4 Walk-Off Win
Cincinnati, Ohio -- The Creighton Baseball team suffered a bit of deja vu on Sunday as the Bluejays jumped out to a 4-0 lead, only to see Xavier rally for a walk-off 6-4 win on Sunday, May 15. It was the second consecutive day that the Bluejays saw an early lead result in a walk-off win for the Musketeers.
The loss was the first BIG EAST series loss for the Bluejays in their three years as members of the BIG EAST. Creighton fell to 33-13 on the season and 11-4 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier moved to 24-27 overall and 11-4 in conference play.
Just as the Bluejays had on Saturday, Creighton plated three runs in the second inning to jump out to an early edge. After senior Brett Murray opened the second with a single through the right side, senior Harrison Crawford belted his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall to make it 2-0. Later in the inning after a one-out walk to freshman Keith Oren, junior Daniel Woodrow put runners on second and third with a double to left-center. Junior Nicky Lopez drove home the third run of the inning with a sac fly to left to make it 3-0.
Creighton added a run in the third on a leadoff single by senior Reagan Fowler, a two-out walk to Crawford and an RBI single to center from junior Kevin Connolly.
Bluejay starter Keith Rogalla cruised into the seventh as he held the Musketeers scoreless, but a one-out walk followed by back-to-back singles sent Rogalla to the bench. Senior John Oltman limited the damage to one run, retiring both men he faced in the seventh.
Creighton seemed poised to put the game away in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one down and Fowler at the dish against Musketeer closer Garrett Schilling. The Omaha native lined a smash up the middle that was snagged by a diving Andre Jernigan at short. Nicky Lopez was doubled off second to end the inning.
The momentum from the top of the eighth as well as the run in the seventh charged the Xavier offense as the Musketeers touched Oltman for three runs to knot the game at 4-4.
In the ninth Creighton closer David Gerber retired the first two Musketeers, but a misplay in right allowed Joe Gellenbeck to deliver his second walk-off hit in as many days with a home run to left.
Gerber took the loss (3-3), allowing two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Schilling collected his second win of the series (3-3), holding the Bluejays scoreless in two innings of work.
Creighton returns home for a split doubleheader against Nebraska-Omaha (12:30 pm) and Nebraska (6:30 pm) on Tuesday, May 17 in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
