Queens, N.Y. -- The Creighton Baseball team were forced to settle for a series victory over St. John's as the Bluejays dropped the regular-season finale to the Red Storm, 6-2, on Saturday, May 21.
The loss gave the Bluejays a 36-15 record and a 13-5 mark in BIG EAST play, second in the conference. St. John's, meanwhile, moved to 27-24-1 overall and 9-9 in BIG EAST action.
The game got off to a poor start for the Bluejays as St. John's parlayed a leadoff walk and three singles into three first inning runs off Bluejay starter Keith Rogalla. The Illinois native recovered to hold the Red Storm just two hits over the following six frames.
Creighton's offense pulled within a run in the top of the third. After the first two Bluejays went down quickly, sophomore Keith Oren reached on a wild pitch third strike, then junior Daniel Woodrow dropped a bunt single down the third base line. Junior Nicky Lopez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then senior Reagan Fowler slapped a two-run single to left to make it 3-2.
Although Rogalla continued to put zeros on the scoreboard, the Creighton offense was unable to scratch across the tying run.
Finally in the bottom of the eighth the Red Storm plated three more runs on the Bluejay bullpen, to put the game out of reach.
Rogalla took the loss (5-3), despite a 112-pitch effort. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks in the loss.
St. John's starter Michael Lopresti pitched on an hour of notice as the Red Storm scheduled starter was ill. Lopresti responded by limiting Creighton to two runs over 5.1 innings to earn the win (3-0).
Fowler's 1-for-3, two RBI performance led the Bluejay offense.
Both teams have advanced to the BIG EAST Baseball Championships next week in Aberdeen, Md. The No. 2 seeded Bluejays will battle No. 3 Seton Hall at 6:00 pm (CT), while No. 4 St. John's will face No. 1 Xavier on Thursday, May 26 at 2:30 pm (CT).
