Creighton vs. Seton Hall Series: Bluejays Lead 9-3
Creighton owns a 9-3 all-time record against Seton Hall. The Pirates, however, won the last meeting 5-4 in the series finale between the two teams this season.
The two teams have met in the BIG EAST Tournament three times, once in 2014 and twice last season. The Bluejays came out on top in each of those battles.
Scouting the Pirates (2016: 38-18, 10-8 BIG EAST)
No preview of Seton Hall can logically begin in another place then with the Pirates speed. Seton Hall leads the NCAA with 183 stolen bases as a team, including 52 by NCAA leader Derek Jenkins. Given an opportunity, regardless of how small, the Pirates will steal at will.
An extremely patient group, Seton Hall has taken 267 walks in 56 games (just under five per contest). Those walks often turn into runs as the Pirates swipe second and third.
On the bump Thursday's opponent is the best Seton Hall has to offer in Shane
McCarthy (6-4, 2.30 ERA, 94.0 IP). McCarthy was a tough luck loser against the Bluejays earlier this season, allowing just one earned run on April 8 in a 3-1 loss.
As a team Seton Hall is hitting .275, led by Zach Weigel (.327), Mike Alescio (.316) and Derek Jenkins (.305).
The Pirates enter the BIG EAST Tournament as one of the hotest teams, sweeping Butler to earn the No. 3 seed in the final weekend of the regular-season.
Familiar Four
During the Bluejays three seasons as a member of the BIG EAST, this is the second time that the Baseball Championships have featured Creighton, Seton Hall, St. John's and Xavier. The quartet were also in the 2014 tournament. The Bluejays, Pirates and Red Storm, were also part of the Final Four last season.
A Little Something Extra
Once the post-season has begun, no team should need any extra motivation. That said, every team looks for it. The Bluejays have plenty.
Seton Hall - The Pirates and Bluejays have formed a budding rivalry over Creighton's first three seasons. Each meeting seems to bring additional energy on both sides of the field.
St. John's - The Red Storm downed
Creighton in the BIG EAST Championship last season on the Bluejays home field. The Bluejays have kept pictures of St. John's celebrating at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in the locker room as a reminder of what they want to avoid.
Xavier - The Musketeers upended Creighton in the 2014 BIG EAST Championship game. In addition Xavier delivered the first series loss to the Bluejays in three seasons in the BIG EAST earlier this year. Finally the
Musketeers earned the No. 1 seed in this tournament.
Tired of Playing Second Fiddle
In each of the last two seasons the Bluejays have reached the BIG EAST Tournament Final, only to come up just short. Creighton will look to remove those memories this season.
Hammer Time
Junior Brennan Hammer has struggled during his first season as a Bluejay, but the Iowa native appears to be finding his role as a late-inning pinch hitter. Hammer delivered a go-ahead two-run single against Thomas Hackimer on May 19, then collected another RBI pinch-hit single the following day.
Hammer became the first Bluejay since 2008 to deliver hits in pinch-hitting at-bats in consecutive games. The last time is happened was on March 29 & 30, 2008 by Ian Dike.
Lopez Breaks the HR Seal
Junior Nicky Lopez played 138 games as a Bluejay before smacking his first HR. After hitting his first in game 139 against Nebraska on May 17, Lopez took little time to collect his second. Nicky repeated the feat with his second career round tripper against St. John's on May 20.
