Cyclones Overcome Women's Soccer, 3-1
8/28/2016 3:41:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Omaha, Neb. -- Facing an Iowa State team that did not play another match this week, fatigue was a factor as the Creighton women's soccer squad dropped a 3-1 decision to the Cyclones on Sunday, Aug. 28.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-1-1, while Iowa State moved to 2-1-0.
Creighton started the match with crisp passes to control possession through the opening 15 minutes. That control yielded the first Bluejay scoring chance of the match in the sixth minute. The opportunity began with corner sent in by senior Emily Roll, which was headed high into the air by Iowa State. Senior Lauren Sullivan leaped to collect the ball, heading it to freshman Caeley Lordeman for a one-touch goal from six yards away to make it 1-0.
Iowa State pulled even in the 24th minute via a long pass from Emily Steil to Korree Willer. The result was a one-on-one battle between Willer and Bluejay goalkeeper Erin Scott. Willer forced Scott to commit and used a crossing shot for the equalizing goal.
Playing in very hot conditions, the fresher team seized control in second half as Iowa State outshot Creighton 14-2 in the final 45 minutes. The result was Cyclone goals in the 65th and 80th minutes. The game-winning goal was supplied by Cyclone Tegan Alexander, taking a pass from Steil, and slamming it in from 12 yards out. Klasey Medelberg put the match away with an unassisted goal at 79:56.
Iowa State closed the match with a 20-10 edge on shots and a 6-1 advantage on corners.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, Sept. 2 as Creighton hosts Kansas State at 7 pm.
