Sullivan's Five Point Performance Lifts Women's Soccer By Yale, 4-2
9/18/2016 1:27:00 PM | Women's Soccer
New Haven, Conn. -- After watching her goal against Rhode Island disappear in a power outage caused by a transformer exploding, senior Lauren Sullivan responded with a five-point explosion of her own to lift the Creighton women's soccer team to a 4-2 win over Yale on Sunday, Sept. 18.
The win moved Creighton to 5-1-2 on the season, while Yale fell to 4-3-2.
Creighton jumped out to an early lead in the sixth minute as Sullivan dribbled down the right side then found freshman Taryn Jakubowski for her second goal of the season from 15 yards out.
The Bluejays opening tally seemed to awaken the Bulldogs as Yale responded with goals in the 21st and 24th minute to seize a 2-1 edge. Yale's first goal was courtesy of a corner as Sarah Mccauley knocked home a goal off a rebounded shot by Kristina Kim.
Moments later Aerial Chavarin boosted Yale to the 2-1 lead by heading in a pass from Michelle Alonzie from 10 yards away.
While the Bluejay goals woke up the Bulldogs, Yale's tallies served to anger Sullivan. The senior responded in the 34th minute, stealing a pass from Yale goalkeeper Jane Buckley and banging home the equalizer from five yards away.
The score remained 2-2 through halftime, yet early in the second half Sullivan answered the call once more. This time she took a feed from freshman Caeley Lordemann, then blasted the game-winning goal from 17 yards out.
Creighton's final goal came off the foot of freshman Jaylin Bosak as Jakubowski found her open inside the box to make it 4-2.
With just under 15 minutes remaining, Yale appeared poised to climb within a goal as Chavarin fired in a penalty kick. Bluejay goalkeeper Erin Scott, who entered at the start of the second half, denied Chavarin with a diving save.
Scott went on to earn the victory for the Bluejays moving to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Bluejays return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 pm in the BIG EAST opener against Marquette.
