Riggs Lennon Scores Four Goals As Men's Soccer defeats DePaul

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Riggs Lennon tied a Creighton school-record with four goals as the No. 12 Creighton men's soccer team defeated DePaul 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago.
The Bluejays improved to 5-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons fell to 5-3-2 and 0-2-0 during conference action.
Lennon became the sixth player in Bluejay history to record a four-goal match, and the first since 2001. Mike Tranchilla was the last Creighton player to score four goals, as he accomplished the feat as part of Creighton's 5-3 victory over Evansville during the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference tournament.Â
Lennon converted his first goal on Saturday during the 14th minute. Noah Franke crossed the ball from the right side of the pitch towards the middle of the box where Lennon launched the shot and found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.Â
The senior added his second goal of the match during the early stages of the second half. Joel Rydstrand sent a corner kick into the box, and Lennon headed the ball from the right side of the 18-yard box into the net to give Creighton a 2-0 lead.
DePaul scored its lone goal during the 75th minute to cut the deficit to one goal. Erik Rodriguez converted a shot from the middle of the box that ended up in the back of the net. Caleb Pothast and Simon Megally each recorded assists on the play.Â
Lennon's third and fourth goals came less than a minute apart.Â
During the 86th minute, Akeem Ward sent a ball towards the the front of the goal from the endline before Lennon redirected it into the back of the net.
Before DePaul could recover from going down two goals, Lennon recorded his fourth goal at 86:19 in the second half. Englis sent a pass from the left side of the field to Lennon running down the right side of the box. Lennon one-touched the ball inside the far post for the final goal of the match. Franke and Englis each notched an assist on the play.
Only 33 seconds passed off the scoreboard between the final two goals of the match for Lennon.Â
Lennon took only four shots to record his four goals. He now has eight goals this season for the Bluejays. Lennon's current season total is more than he had during three seasons at Virginia (7).Â
Franke tallied two assists on the day, and leads Creighton with five this season.Â
The Bluejays held a 19-11 shot advantage, and 11-5 in shots on goal.Â
Creighton returns to Omaha to face Loyola-Chicago on Tuesday night at Morrison Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
