Omaha, Neb. -- Thanks to a late goal from senior Lauren Sullivan, the Creighton women's soccer team collected a 2-1 victory over South Dakota on Friday, Sept. 9.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 4-1-2 on the season, while South Dakota fell to 1-5-1.
After waiting through a 90-minute delay due to lightning, Creighton dominated possession in the opening period. The Bluejays limited the Coyotes to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes of play, holding the ball in its half of play for well over 75% of the half. The elongated possession yielded six shot, highlighted by the lead goal from freshman Jaylin Bosak in the 26th minute of play.
Creighton's goal was put in motion by a Coyote foul that gave senior Emily Roll a free kick from 30-yards out. The Gretna native served the ball just in front off the net, where Bosak headed in her second goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 through the halftime break, but only due to some amazing defense by the Coyotes. In the 51st minute of play, freshman Alyssa Swift smashed a shot from 30-yards off the crossbar. Fellow freshman Taryn Jakubowski headed the ball toward the net, only to see Coyote Katlin Ptacek head the ball away for a team save.
Moments later South Dakota nabbed the equalizer in the 68th minute as Corey Strang converted a penalty kick at the 67:04 mark.
Creighton's offense went back to work right away, earning a scoring chance for freshman Kylin Grubb under a minute later. The pressure produced another chance for the Bluejays in the 71st minute as Jakubowski beat two defenders along the right side, then sent a ball ahead for Sullivan. Jakubowski's pass created a one-on-one chance from the right corner of the penalty box for Sullivan. The senior forward delivered in the clutch, blasting a crossing shot into the left corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
Creighton returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 15 as the Bluejays travel to Rhode Island to face the Rams at 6 pm.
