Late Match Heroics From Houser and Meola Give Women's Soccer a 1-0 Win over Villanova

Omaha, Neb. -- In the midst of a 0-0 battle in the 88th minute, sophomore goalkeeper McKenzie Meola's stop of a penalty kick changed the fortunes of both Creighton and Villanova in one dive as the Bluejays went on to defeat the Wildcats 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 15.
The win lifted Creighton to 3-9-3 on the season and 1-3-2 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova fell to 6-9-0 overall and 2-4-0 in conference action.
After Creighton freshman Haylee Blach was whistled for a foul in the box with 2:10 remaining, Villanova sent senior Emily Kuefler out for the penalty kick. Kuefler sent the ball towards the right corner, where a diving Meola was there to knock it out of bounds. The resulting corner kick for Villanova was stolen away by the Bluejays, then sent ahead to junior Kaira Houser just beyond the goal box. Houser raced toward midfield, briefly losing the ball. After regaining possession, Houser beat three Villanova defenders down the field then bested Wildcats keeper Emily Harris with 1:25 remaining in the match.
From the foul call that resulted in a penalty kick to the goal by Houser took less than three minutes of real time.
In the match the Bluejays were outshot 27-8, while the Wildcats held a 14-0 edge in corners.
Meola, the reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, closed the match with six saves including the save of the penalty kick.
Houser's goal was her third of the season and ninth in her Creighton career.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 19 as the Bluejays host Butler at 7:00 pm in the annual Pink Game to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
