Washington, D.C. -- Powered by a first-half goal from sophomore Hannah Miller and the stellar play of sophomore goalkeeper McKenzie Meola, the Creighton women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with No. 12 Georgetown on Thursday, Oct. 5.
Thursday's result was the first tie for the Bluejays against a ranked opponent since 2002 when Creighton earned a draw with No. 19 Nebraska on Sept. 20.
The draw moved the Bluejays to 2-9-2 on the season and 0-3-1 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown fell to 9-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play.

Junior Kaira Houser drew a foul just outside the goalbox to give Creighton its first scoring chance, then sophomore Hannah Miller squeezed a shot into the back of the net past the dive of Georgetown's goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman. The Bluejays held the edge through halftime, giving a renewed sense of energy to the squad as the team went to break.

Georgetown pounded away throughout the second half, but Creighton's defense remained strong. Georgetown found a seem in the 81st minute as Paula Germino-Watnick struck the equalizing goal from 20 yards away along the left side to knot the match.
The Bluejays refused to panic with the match knotted at 1-1, continuing to stay within themselves and compact the game into a smaller zone on the the defensive end. The result was a tough task for the back line as well as Meola, facing 36 Hoyas shots. Georgetown closed the match with a 36-2 shot advantage, including a 28-1 difference in the final 65 minutes, yet Creighton refused to be denied.
"What I saw today was complete desire from our entire team, we didn't make anything easy on Georgetown and I'm so very proud of this team, said head coach Ross Paule. "They did exactly what we asked them to do against a very talented team. We wanted to stay compact and not allow [Georgetown] any space to make runs at us. We held one of the best teams in the country in check for the full 110 minutes."
