Foster and Thomas combine for 39 points
SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 25 Creighton men's basketball team fell 91-74 to No. 15 Gonzaga on Friday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
Marcus Foster led the Bluejays with 21 points, while Khyri Thomas had 18. Foster and Thomas combined to make nine of Creighton's 12 three-pointers.
Killian Tillie finished with 22 points to lead the host Bulldogs, while Zach Norvell Jr. and Silas Melson each had 21.
Creighton (5-2) led the entire first half with the exception of three ties, and owned a 44-37 lead at the half.
After the two teams traded three-pointers to open the game, Foster gave the Bluejays a 16-7 lead with a three-pointer from the left wing. Foster finished the opening 20 minutes 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and led Creighton with 15 first-half points.
Gonzaga (7-1) tied the game at 20 after a three-point play from Melson, but Martin Krampelj answered with a jumper in the lane.
The Bulldogs tied it at 22 before Toby Hegner made consecutive three-pointers to give Creighton a 28-22 edge with 6:42 to play in the first half. It was Hegner's first action since spraining his ankle at Northwestern on Nov. 15th.
Gonzaga pulled within 39-37 after a long three-pointer from Melson before Creighton scored the final five points of the opening 20 minutes.
The host Bulldogs took their first lead of the night at 47-46 with a layup by Norvell, part of an 18-2 run to take a 57-48 lead with 13:51 to play.
The Bluejays trimmed the deficit to six points after a transition three-pointer by Foster to make it 67-61 Gonzaga, but the Bulldogs led by more than six points the rest of way before winning by 17.
Creighton returns to court for a home game at CenturyLink Center Omaha on Tuesday against North Dakota. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTES: The game closed out a stretch of four ranked teams in five contests for Creighton, with the Jays going 2-2 in those contests ... Khyri Thomas has made a three-pointer in 21 straight games ... Marcus Foster has scored 10 or more points in 25 straight contests ... Josh Perkins entered the night averaging 15.6 points per game but was held to five points on 0-for-2 shooting from the field ...
