Martin Krampelj's 23 points not enough for CU
NEWARK, N.J. -- Martin Krampelj had a career-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as No. 23 Seton Hall scored the game's final seven points to post a 90-84 win over No. 25 Creighton on Thursday in the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
The Pirates are now 12-2 (1-0 BIG EAST), while Creighton had its five-game win streak snapped to fall to 10-3 (0-1 BIG EAST).
The Bluejays took an early 11-6 lead thanks to a 7-0 run by Krampelj that put CU in front. Seton Hall fought back to tie the score at 15-all before a 13-5 Bluejay run saw the visitors build a 28-20 and prompt a Seton Hall timeout.
Marcus Foster would miss five minutes with an injury but came back with a flurry. He had 12 points in the final 12 minutes of the first half, including a floater at the first half buzzer to give CU a 53-42 lead going to the break. Foster was one of three Bluejays in double-figures in the first half, as Khyri Thomas and Krampelj each had 11. CU shot just 3-of-16 from deep in the first 20 minutes but made 17-of-21 two-pointers and 10-of-11 free throws before the break.
Creighton forced a shot clock violation on Seton Hall's first trip of the second half, then fed Krampelj for a lob. Davion Mintz followed with a trey on the next possession as CU took a 58-45 lead, its largest of the night. Seton Hall answered with a 15-5 run to excite the locals, making 4-of-5 field goals in that span, to lead to a CU timeout.
The Pirates drew within one point at 63-62 but consecutive dunks and a jumper by Thomas saw CU stretch the lead to eight at 71-63. Seton Hall answered again, taking a 77-76 lead with 6:52 left on a Desi Rodriguez lay-up. A hoop from Ty-Shon Alexander returned the lead to CU, only to have Angel Delgado to put back a miss to make it 81-78 SHU with 5:45 remaining. Delgado then hit two foul shots with 5:14 left to put the Pirates up five, fouling out Toby Hegner in the process.
Creighton answered the game of runs with a 6-0 run of its own, taking an 84-83 lead with 3:20 to go on Foster's first bucket of the second half, but would not score again.Angel Delgado fouled out with 18 points and 14 rebounds with 3:09 to play, with CU up by that same score, but the Jays missed the front end of the subsequent free throw.
Khadeen Carrington returned the lead to Seton Hall, and a free throw from Michael Nzei put the Pirates in front by two (86-84) with 1:29 left. The Jays would then miss a pair of opportunities to tie it or take the lead before Carrington buried two more foul shots with 19.5 left. Two more foul shots by Rodriguez with 12.0 left capped the game's scoring.
Krampelj led CU with 10 rebounds, sharing high honors off the glass with 10 boards by Ronnie Harrell Jr. Foster (14), Thomas (13) and Davion Mintz (10) also scored in double-figures for CU.
