Creighton rallies from a halftime defiict for second time in three days
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's basketball team finished off a 2-0 start to BIG EAST play with a come-from-behind 69-58 win over visiting Georgetown on Saturday, Dec. 30th.
The Bluejays are now 8-4 on the season, with Georgetown falling to 6-6 (1-1 BIG EAST).
Trailing 13-6 midway through the opening quarter (4:16), the tandem of junior Audrey Faber and senior Sydney Lamberty delivered an 8-0 run to push the Bluejays to their first lead at 14-13 (1:33). After the opening frame the game was all square at 15-15.
The second quarter went back and forth as both offense executed precisely. The Hoyas, however, turned a 32-30 edge with 2:42 left into a 40-32 advantage with 50 seconds left. Lamberty closed the quarter with a short jumper as Creighton trailed 40-34 at the half. Georgetown's Dionna White and Mikayla Venson combined for 17 points in the second quarter.
Following the intermission seven quick points from Faber quickly erased that deficit as Creighton surged ahead 41-40 (7:03), its first lead since 26-25. The Bluejay lead grew to five (51-46) on an old-fashioned three-point play by Olivia Elger, while Creighton took a 53-50 edge into the fourth.
Leading 59-55 with just under four minutes left, senior Myah Mellman knocked down a crucial trey to give Creighton a 62-55 cushion. Moments later lay-ups by sophomore Jaylyn Agnew and Faber put the contest away at 66-56 with 2:05 remaining. Agnew buried a trey with 40.3 left to make it 69-57 and end any comeback hopes.
Faber led Creighton with 26 points, making 11-of-15 field goal attempts, and added seven rebounds while Sydney Lamberty added 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for her sixth career double-double. Olivia Elger led all players with seven assists and also contributed 11 points in 28 minutes off the bench. CU shot 56 percent for the game (28-50) and made 9-of-11 foul shots.
White led Georgetown with 18 points on the afternoon, matching her season average, but fouled out with 1:08 left. The Hoyas also got 17 points from Venson and 10 points and 10 rebounds by Yazmine Belk. Georgetown made just 6-of-22 shots after halftime (27.3 percent) and shot 39.6 percent overall.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 2, with a game that will air on FS2. Bluejay head coach Jim Flanery will be mic'd up for the entire broadcast, which will be presented commercial free as part of FOX's second All-Access broadcast in as many years.
