Softball Run-Rules Valparaiso to Open Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Creighton softball team picked up a 12-4 victory in five innings over Valparaiso on Friday afternoon at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Bluejays are now 7-13 this season, while the Crusaders fell to 10-5.
Creighton opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first.
Allie Reinhart drove in one run with a bases loaded walk, and Jordyn Sturgeon hit a single down the left-field line to drive in two more for the Bluejays.
Reinhart and Sturgeon also had RBIs in the third. Reinhart singled through the middle to drive in Sam Dellinger and Sturgeon doubled to left-center to make it 5-0.
Valparaiso cut the deficit to one with four runs in bottom of the third.
Creighton responded with a three-run fourth inning. Reinhart sent a sharp ground ball to the third baseman who attempted to make an out on the play, but three runs came around to score on an error.
The Bluejays ended the game with four runs top of the fifth.
Tash Coffiel drove in one before Anna O'Gorman extended the lead to eight with one swing.
O'Gorman sent a 2-2 offering over the center-field fence for a three-run home run, the first of her career in 106 games played.
The Crusaders went down in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game with the eight-run rule.
Four different Bluejays recorded two hits, while O'Gorman and Sturgeon each had three RBIs to pace Creighton.
Michal Hylton earned the victory after throwing 2.1 innings of one-hit relief.
Creighton continues play at the Hawkeye Invitational with two games on Saturday. The Bluejays will start the day with a contest against South Dakota State at noon.
