Harrison Lang Earns BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Excellence Award

NEW YORK -- Former Creighton men's tennis student-athlete Harrison Lang was honored with a 2016-17 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award, the conference announced on Wednesday, July 26.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
In the classroom, Lang finished his undergraduate studies with a perfect 4.00 GPA and received a bachelor's degree in neuroscience with a minor in biology at Creighton University's commencement ceremonies in May. The Niwot, Colo., native earned a spot on the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large Second Team. He also received the Men's 2016-17 BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award earlier this spring, which includes a scholarship towards his medical school expenses at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Additionally, Lang was the recipient of Creighton's Rev. Carl M. Reinert, S.J., Scholar-Athlete Award as Creighton's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2016-17.

Lang is a four-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete (2014-17), three-time All-BIG EAST Academic Team and ITA All-America Team honoree, and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Men's At-Large First Team selection (2016, 2017).
During his four-year career on the courts, Lang finished with 97 combined victories including 55 in singles and 42 in doubles. He ranks 11th in program history in combined wins and 10th in singles victories. Lang made the 2017 All-BIG EAST team after he picked up 11 singles victories while playing at the top two positions during the 2017 dual season, and finished 10-9 in doubles action, including a 9-8 mark while pairing with Brooks Kendall at the No. 1 position.
Lang is one of 22Â honorees which includes 16 seniors, four juniors and two graduate students. Nine of the winners competed in the NCAAs in their respective sports this past year. Fourteen were or have been BIG EAST Players of the Year or Individual BIG EAST Championship winners. All 10 full-time BIG EAST members were represented, with two affiliate members. Seton Hall had the most honorees with five, followed by Villanova with four and Butler with three. DePaul had a pair of winners, and Creighton, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Xavier and affiliates Temple and Liberty had one. Patrick Tiernan of Villanova and Erik Peterson of Butler were repeat honorees.
