Men's Soccer Rallies For 2-1 Overtime Victory Over Tulsa

Ricky Lopez-Espin tied the match with 16 seconds left in regulation, Luke Haakenson with game-winner during 100th minute
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team rallied with goals during the final minute of regulation and closing moments of the first period of extra time to defeat Tulsa 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday night at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 4-3-0 on the year, while the Golden Hurricane fell to 2-3-1.
During the 90th minute, Creighton's Joel Rydstrand sent a corner kick in from the bench side of the field towards the near post. After a Tulsa defender deflected the ball, goalkeeper Michael Kluver recovered the bouncing ball and fired a shot towards the goal before Ricky Lopez-Espin redirected the ball into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1 with 16Â seconds to play during regulation.
Tulsa controlled the majority of the extra time before the Bluejays converted a golden goal during the 100th minute.Â
With less than a minute to play in the first overtime, Lopez-Espin stole the ball from a Tulsa attacker and sent a through ball across midfield to Luke Haakenson. Haakenson broke loose from a defender and picked up the ball about 40 yards from the goal line, beat the goalkeeper during a one-on-one opportunity, and scored from 17 yards out to give Creighton a 2-1 victory with 13.2 seconds showing on the clock.
Both teams had multiple opportunities to score during the opening 45 minutes, but only one ball found the back the of the net as Tulsa took a one-goal lead during the 41st minute. Chase Bromstedt sent a corner kick towards the near post where Zack Stavrou headed the ball towards Gustavo Vargas who sent the ball past Kluver to make it 1-0.Â
Creighton started the second half with a sense of urgency to tie the match and recorded seven shots before the Golden Hurricane tallied their first of the second half.Â
The Bluejays held a 16-7 edge in shots during the second half but only converted one for a goal during the final minute of regulation time.
Tulsa's Marcel Da Silva made seven saves after halftime and ended the match with 11 overall, one shy of the Morrison Stadium record of 12 which has happened twice --Â last by Northern Illinois' Andrew Glaeser (Sept. 22, 2015).
Creighton finished the night with a 24-14 edge in shots, including 13-6 in shots on goal.
Kluver's assist on the game-tying goal was the third by a Creighton goalkeeper since the program was reinstated prior to the 1990 season. Matt Allen (2005) and Kevin Doyle (1992) are the other two Bluejay goalkeepers to record assists.Â
Defensively, the senior goalkeeper tied his career-high with five saves to help Creighton to its fourth victory of the season.
Lopez-Espin's game-tying goal marked his team-leading fourth of the year, while Haakenson recorded his third goal of the season for the game-winner.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Saturday for a match against Villanova. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Wildcats is scheduled for 7 p.m.
