Friars pull away in second half to drop Bluejays
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Creighton men's basketball team dropped an 85-71 decision at Providence on Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out crowd of 12,927 at Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Providence improved to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in the BIg EAST with the win, while Creighton dropped to 15-5 (5-3 BIG EAST) with the setback.
Providence connected on its first four shots to build an early 8-2 lead. The Bluejays responded with the next five points before a 10-0 Friars run pushed the margin to 18-7 and forced a timeout from Creighton coach Greg McDermott. The Bluejays answered with a 9-0 run, and tied the game at 25-all with 4:08 before the half on two foul shots by Mitch Ballock.
The first half would feature four ties before PC settled for a 36-33 lead at the break. Marcus Foster led CU with 11 points, all in the final 10:28, while Ronnie Harrell Jr. paced CU with five rebounds before the break. Creighton shot 29.0 percent (9-31) in the opening 20 minutes, but did drain 4-of-10 three-point attempts.
Providence got 10 points from Rodney Bullock, and eight points by Kalif Young before he was relegated to the bench in foul trouble. The Friars shot 53.8 percent (14-26) in the first half and owned a 19-15 rebound advantage.
Creighton took its first, and only, lead of the game at 39-38 with 17:55 to go on a three-point play by Foster, but it would be short-lived. Jalen Lindsey answered with a three-pointer for the Friars just 18 seconds later, and Nate Watson converted a traditional three-point play the next trip down the floor to quickly push the lead to five.
Trailing 67-56 with 7:32 remaining, Khyri Thomas would spearhead a 7-0 run to draw the Bluejays within four points with 4:52 to go. The teams traded baskets before a huge trey by Lindsey moved the Friar lead to 72-65 with just under three minutes remaining, but CU found itself down 74-69 with 1:42 left after a score by Foster. The Bluejays would get no closer as the Friars got a three-point play by Alpha Diallo with 1:28 left and Cartwright added two foul shots with 1:10 to play to seal the victory for the hosts.
Diallo had 21 points and 10 rebounds for PC, while Cartwright added 20 points and seven assists. Providence shot 17-of-18 from the free throw line and made 53.4 percent from the field (31-58) overall.
Creighton was paced by 22 points by Foster, while Thomas (15) and Hegner (11) also finished in double-figures. Creighton shot 39.4 percent for the game and made 12-of-14 foul shots. CU had 14 assists on 26 baskets and just seven turnovers.
Creighton remains on the road until Tuesday night, when it visits St. John's (10-10, 0-8 BIG EAST) in a game scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. Central tip. That contest will air on 1620 AM (KOZN) and be televised nationally on FS1.
