Omaha, Neb. -- As the 2018-19 season quickly approaches, the Creighton men's and women's basketball programs welcomed media from throughout the area to discuss the oncoming season.
Coming off back-to-back trips to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the women's team will be search for new heights. Two times in Bluejay history Creighton has sent consecutive teams to the NCAA Tournament, but in the Bluejays previous run (2012 & 2013) ended without a third year. Led by its top two scorers from last season (Audrey Faber and Jaylyn Agnew) the women's team will to make it a threepeat.
A young nucleus leads the Creighton men's basketball team in 2018-19 as it vies for a third consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament. CU's top three scorers from a year ago are gone. Replacing two-time All-BIG EAST pick Marcus Foster (19.8 ppg.), two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Khyri Thomas (15.1 ppg.) and forward Toby Hegner (8.4 ppg.) will be no easy task, but Greg McDermott's ninth season on the Creighton sideline brings renewed enthusiasm thanks to a mix of talented veterans and the arrival of six newcomers. Davion Mintz started all but one game a year ago at point guard and led the BIG EAST in assist to turnover ratio. He'll be asked to take on more of a scoring role in his junior campaign, while continuing to run Creighton's up-tempo offense. Another key returner is Martin Krampelj, who averaged 11.9 points and 8.1 reobunds per game. However, the junior missed the final 14 games of last season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in January. Now rehabbed, look for Krampelj to continue the development that saw him become one of the BIG EAST's most improved players last season.
