#8 Men's Soccer Falls During Double Overtime Against #5 Denver, 1-0

Bluejays ended their six-match winning streak
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 8 Creighton men's soccer team fell 1-0 in double overtime against No. 5 Denver on Tuesday night in front of 3,076 fans at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays fell to 7-2-1 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 9-0-2.
Denver's Stefan DeLeone scored the golden goal during the 105th minute. Creighton attempted to clear a pass near its defensive endline, but the ball found the foot of DeLeone who placed the ball into the back of the net from about 10 yards out. Â
The Bluejays ended the match with a 25-8 edge in shots, including 7-4 in shots on goal. The Pioneers attempted five shots during the first half but did not attempt another until the second overtime period. Creighton outshot Denver 19-0 during the second half and first overtime.Â
Denver tested Creighton's Paul Kruse early with two shots on goal during the first six minutes. Andre Shinyashiki, the nation's leading goal scorer with 19, forced Kruse to make his first save during the opening minute. Shinyashiki recorded two shots on Tuesday, each during the first half.Â
Luke Haakenson led Creighton with four shots, as 14 different Bluejays recorded at least one.Â
During the 31st minute, Ziyad Fares tallied the first shot on goal as the junior sent a low arching shot towards goaline but Will Palmquist secured the ball for his first of seven saves.Â
Sven Koenig gave Creighton their final chance of the first half, but his shot went wide during the 44th minute.
The Bluejays controlled possession during the second half of regulation play and held a 14-0 edge in shots. Younes Boudadi, Akeem Ward and Haakenson each fired shots on goal in the second half as the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes of play.
Creighton's most dangerous opportunity in overtime occurred during the closing moments of the first 10-minute period. Joel Rydstrand launched on goal from about 20 yards away that was saved and Koenig recovered a rebound and fired a shot that was also saved as Palmquist recorded his sixth and seventh stops of the night.
About a minute into the second overtime Denver tallied its first shot since the end of the opening 45 minutes. Kruse easily secured a free kick for his first save since the sixth minute of Tuesday's match.
Kruse ended the match with three saves and allowed only his second goal at home this season. The Bluejays hold a 5-1-1 record and 0.27 goals against average at Morrison Stadium during the 2018 campaign.Â
Overall, Creighton owns a 0.39 goals against average with only four goals against during 934 minutes of action through 10 matches this season.
Creighton returns to action and resumes BIG EAST play on Saturday night in Queens, New York against St. John's. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Red Storm is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central.Â
