Bluejays make 19 three-pointers and have six men in double-figures
OMAHA, Neb. -- Ty-Shon Alexander went 6-for-6 in the first half, including five three-pointers, to lead six men in double-figures as the Creighton men's basketball team rolled to a 101-57 exhibition victory over Winona State on Saturday night.
Creighton made 19-of-40 three-pointers, including 11-of-21 from downtown in the first half while rolling to a 53-23 intermission lead.
Winona State was led by 14 points from Charlie Koontz. The Warriors made 32.8 percent of their shots and were outrebounded 44-32.
In addition to 17 points from Alexander, Davion Mintz scored 12 and the Bluejays got 10 points apiece from Martin Krampelj, Samson Froling, Mitch Ballock and Marcus Zegarowski. The Bluejays owned a 24-0 advantage in fast break points over its Division II counterpart.
Alexander, who never scored more than 14 points in any game and averaged 5.5 points per game as a freshman, recorded CU's first points just 61 seconds into the season. The sophomore's first trey stretched the lead to 8-2 and a steal and breakaway dunk by Krampelj made it 10-2. It was Krampelj's first basket since returning from a torn ACL suffered in January.
A 9-0 flurry featuring trifectas by Krampelj, Mitch Ballock and Alexander grew CU's lead to 21-7 and forced a timeout by Winona State coach Todd Eisner, a 1991 Creighton grad. Consecutive lay-ups by Ballock and Krampelj ballooned the lead to 36-14, and the margin grew as large as 53-20 in the first half.
Creighton used a 13-2 burst in the second half to extend the lead to 82-42 with 7:06 remaining. Froling helped CU break the century mark for the first time in an exhibition since 2015 with a trey in the final minute to cap the scoring.
Creighton opens the 2018-19 regular-season on Nov. 6 vs. Western Illinois. For ticket information, call (402) 280-JAYS.
NOTES: Greg McDermott improved to 27-0 in exhibition games as a Division I head coach, including a 10-0 mark at Creighton. All but one of those triumphs have been by double-figures ... Creighton had not played an exhibition game on a Saturday since at least 1981-82 before this evening ... Samson Froling became just the second true freshman to start CU's first exhibition game since 1989, joining Khyri Thomas (2015-16) ... Creighton has won 19 straight exhibition games since last losing on Nov. 16, 2003 ... Creighton's six newcomers contributed 40 points, 20 rebounds and nine assists in 96 minutes of play ... Creighton never trailed ... Creighton's 40 three-point attempts would be a single-game program record had it been a regular-season contest.
