Campbell Highlights Men's Tennis' Weekend At Redbird Invitational With Flight A Singles Crown

The Bluejays ended the tournament with a 23-12 record
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Freshman Nick Campbell claimed the Fight A Singles championship as the Creighton men's tennis team completed play at the Redbird Invitational on Sunday at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
Overall, the Bluejays ended the invitational (Friday through Sunday) with a 23-12 record, including a 9-3 mark during doubles play.
Campbell defeated DePaul's Chris Casati in straight-sets on Sunday to claim the crown in the top flight. The Cyprus native, held off three set points during a tiebreaker to win the first set (7-6). He ended the match with a 6-4 victory during the second frame. The freshman reached the finals with a come-from-behind victory during the semifinals on Saturday. Campebell won 11 out of 12 games after falling behind 4-1 to defeat host Illinois State's Jorge Bartra Quispe.
Armando Gandini claimed the Flight C singles title as the only player to finish the flight with a 3-0 record. Both Gandini and Mac Mease reached the Flight C finals but played the other semifinalists instead of playing each other. Gandini outlasted Illinois State's Diego Herrera in a third set tiebreaker, while Mease fell during a deciding breaker to Francesco Bonacia (Chicago State). Gandini won in straight-sets during the opening round on Friday and battled from behind to defeat Bonacia 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 on Saturday.
Stratton Brown earned a consolation finals victory (5th place) in Flight A with a 6-4, 6-3 win on Sunday. Brown fell in straight-sets during the first round before winning 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation draw on Saturday.
In Flight C, Daniel Lopez-Rey and Jose Oscar Diaz each earned straight-sets victories to place fifth and seventh, respectively. Lopez-Rey downed DePaul's Tamas Zador 6-3, 7-5 in the consolation final, while Oscar Diaz defeated Eddie Grieseidieck (Marquette) 6-1, 6-3 in the 7th place match.
Joe Hoff claimed third-place in Flight D singles, Hoff moved into the third-place match by falling 10-8 during a deciding third set in the semifinals before sealing third place by default. Luke Moorehead also competed in Flight D and fell in three sets during a seventh-place match on Sunday.
The Bluejays ended the weekend 9-3 during doubles action. Campell and Lopez-Rey combined to go 3-0 during Flight A action, Brown and Mease went 2-1 in Flight B, Oscar Diaz and Moorhead finished 2-1 in Flight C, while Hoff and Gandini also tallied a 2-1 record in Flight D play.
This weekend ended Creighton's fall schedule. The Bluejays will be back in action for the dual season starting in January.
