Bluejays Open BIG EAST play with Comeback Win at DePaul
Chicago, Ill -- Powered by 20 points from a combined 39 points from seniors Brooke Kissinger and Audrey Faber, the Creighton women's basketball team upset #19 DePaul 85-82 in the BIG EAST conference opener on Saturday, Dec. 29.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 7-5 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST action, while DePaul fell to 9-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Kissinger and the Bluejays came out of the gates firing from the jump as sophomore Temi Carda and junior Jaylyn Agnew surrounded Kissinger's first trey with mid-range jump shots to give Creighton a 7-0 early lead. DePaul closed to within three at 16-13 (1:32), but the Bluejays closed the frame with a trio of trifectas from sophomore Tatum Rembao, Carda and freshman Payton Brotzki to build a 25-15 lead after the opening quarter.
The Blue Demons responded like a ranked team is expected to with a 23-2 run to open the second quarter, claiming a 38-27 lead with 3:15 left before the half. Creighton answered with five quick points on a three-pointer from junior Olivia Elger and a pull-up jumper from Agnew to make it 38-32 (2:26). Just before half Faber converted a traditional three-point play to send the two squads to the locked room with DePaul holding a 42-35 edge.
Down 46-38 early in the third period, Kissinger rose to the challenge once more with back-to-back buckets. Kissinger's surge began with a driving laup, then she connected from long range to make it 46-43. Moments later Carda drained two from the charity stripe to bring the Bluejays within a point at 46-45 (6:35). DePaul held the Bluejays at bay over the next four minutes, but trailing 60-56 (1:36) the Bluejays reclaimed the lead (61-60) with 46 seconds left in the period on a trifecta from Faber and two free throws by Elger. The Blue Demons answered with a three-ball from Mart'e Grays and took a two-point advantage to the final frame at 65-63.
The fight shown by the Bluejays in the third quarter, set the stage for the a fantastic final ten minutes. The opening two minutes saw the lead seesaw back and forth five times. Down 69-68 (7:51), the Bluejays seemed to take control of the game with a 9-2 run. Faber got things rolling with a bank shot from the left block for the deuce and the bonus free throw. Follow a DePaul bucket to make it 71-71, Kissinger worked free from back-to-back long balls, giving Creighton a 77-71 edge with 5:42 remaining.
DePaul, however, showed its resolve with a 10-2 run of its own to take back the lead at 81-79 with 1:45 left. As the game moved to the final minute, Faber came through in the clutch with a three-pointer from the left wing to push the Bluejays back in front at 82-81 with 39 seconds remaining. Down the stretch the Bluejays iced the game with three of four from the free throw line and suffocating defense.
Kissinger led Creighton with a career-high 20 points in the game, while Faber finished with 19 points and Elger posted 14 points. DePaul got 17 points from Chante Stonewall to lead the Blue Demons, while Ashton Millender delivered 15 points in the loss.
The Bluejays return to the hardwood on Monday, Dec. 31 as Creighton stays on the road to face #21 Marquette at 2:00 pm in the Al Maguire Center.
