Women's Basketball Settles for Weekend Split, Falling at #20 Marquette 85-67

Milwaukee, Wis. -- Facing their second ranked BIG EAST foe in three days, the Creighton women's basketball team settled for a weekend split as Creighton fell at #20 Marquette 85-67 on Monday, Dec. 31.
The loss dropped Creighton to 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette moved to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Golden Eagles set an early tone for the game by hitting their first seven shots to race out to a 19-8 lead, forcing Bluejay head coach Jim Flanery to use his first timeout. Creighton responded to the adjustments made by their leader, delivering an 11-0 run to knot the game at 19-19.
Junior Olivia Elger started the Bluejay comeback with a three from the right corner with 4:56 left in the first period. Moments later senior Audrey Faber connected from distance to make it 19-14, then junior Jaylyn Agnew joined the three-point party. Faber capped the run with 1:04 left in the frame, scoring off the glass on a turnaround jumper to knot the game at 19-19. Marquette, however, delivered five points in the final 49 seconds to take a 24-19 edge into the second.
The Bluejays remained close through the opening minutes of the second, trailing just 28-25 with 7:22 showing on the clock. A Creighton scoring slump allowed the Golden Eagles to push their edge to 37-25 (4:44), thanks primarily to a trio of three-pointers. The Marquette lead grew as large as 15, but a couple of late three-pointers from Agnew sent the teams to the locker rooms with the Bluejays down 44-33.
Similar to the second quarter, Creighton chipped away early in the third. The Bluejays opened the frame with five straight points to get within six at 44-38 and trailed 53-46 with 4:38 remaining. The 20th ranked Golden Eagles responded with 14 of the next 16 points and took a 70-50 edge into the fourth quarter.
Marquette's advantage proved too much for the Bluejays as Creighton trailed by as much as 25 (79-54) in the final period, before falling 85-67.
Agnew led the Bluejays with 17 points, while Faber finished with 14 and Elger chipped in 11 points.
All five Golden Eagle starters finished in double figures, with Natisha Hiedeman leading the way with 16 points. The remaining four (Erika Davenport, Danielle King, Serena Lott and Amani Wilborn each closed the game with 15 points.
