Hawkeyes take the doubles point before claiming victories at all six singles positions
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 7-0 to Iowa Friday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
The Bluejays are now 2-5 on the season, while Iowa improves to 4-5.
In doubles action, Iowa proved tough to handle with Creighton falling short at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, both falling 6-2. The duo of Alex Koca and Stratton Brown at No. 1 split games with the Hawkeyes at 4-4 before play was stopped after Iowa secured the doubles point.
Brooks Kendall got Creighton going out of the gates in singles, winning the first set 6-3. However, Creighton wasn't able to sustain the momentum, as Iowa took a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot and a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 before clinching the match at 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot.
"We had a couple of disciplinary let downs today but the guys that played fought really hard," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We continue to get better in all areas on the court, and this tough schedule will help us in the long run."
Kendall suffered a 6-2 setback in the second set, before narrowly falling short 15-13 in a dramatic tiebreaker round to decide the top singles match.
"Brooks played some great tennis to put himself in position to win, it's just unfortunate that a couple of things didn't go his way in the match breaker," Lilly said.
Creighton travels to Normal, Ill. next week in weekend matches against DePaul and Illinois State. Bluejay action will begin against the Blue Demons on Saturday, with doubles action starting at 11 a.m.
