Creighton fell 7-4 before bouncing back for a 7-5 victory
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team split a pair of games against Southeast Missouri on Saturday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex. The visiting Redhawks claimed a 7-4 victory during the first game of the day before the Bluejays earned a 7-5 win during the second.
Creighton moved to 10-7 this season, while Southeast Missouri evened its record at 9-9.
During the opening game, the Redhawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead with five runs during the top of the third inning. Southeast Missouri drew four walks to force in one run before Abby Tillotson hit a grand slam to unload the bases and drive in four additional runs with one swing of the bat.
The Redhawks extended their lead to 7-0 with a two-RBI single during the top of the fourth. Â
The Bluejays broke into the run column during the bottom of the fourth frame. Jordyn Sturgeon reached on a fielder's choice and pinch-hitter Nikki McNeil doubled to put runners at second and third for Courtney Sandell. On the first pitch of her at-bat, Sandell legged out an infield single to the SEMO shortstop and drove in Sturgeon from third.Â
Bryana Clark retired the Redhawks in order during the top of the 5th before the Bluejays put up a crooked number during the bottom half of the inning.
Sam Crowley singled and Kelli Finan reached on an error to put runners at first and second with only one out for Hope Moreno. Moreno jumped ahead in the count 2-0 and promptly launched a three-run home run over the left-field wall -- her first home run as a Bluejay -- to cut the deficit to three runs, 7-4.
Southeast Missouri went down quietly during the final two innings but ended each of the bottom halves of the innings with impressive defensive efforts.Â
Ashley Cantu sent a fly ball into the left-center field gap and Redhawks'Â center fielder tracked down the ball on the run for the final out of the sixth.
During the final frame, Mikaela Pechar stood at the plate as the tying run with Bluejays at both first and third base. Pechar lifted a 2-1 delivery into deep right-center field where the Southeast Missouri right fielder caught the ball at the top of the wall for the final out of the game.
Moreno led the Bluejays during the first game of the day after a 2-for-4 performance with three RBIs and her first home run of the season. Crowley also went 2-for-4 and scored once.
The script flipped during the second game as Creighton built a 4-0 lead during the bottom of the first inning.
A single, dropped third strike and walk loaded up the bases before Sturgeon blasted a grand slam well over the right-field wall to give the Bluejays early momentum. The home run marked the senior catcher's first extra-base hit since Feb. 11 against Minnesota and snapped a streak of 12 consecutive official at-bats without a hit.Â
Southeast Missouri cut into the Creighton lead with solo home runs during the top of the second and third innings. The Redhawks ended the second game of the afternoon with four solo home runs.
Sturgeon recorded her fifth RBI of the second game with a screaming single to center field during the bottom half of the third to drive in pinch-runner Jacey Sawyer.
The Bluejays built a five-run lead during the fourth inning with a run-scoring bunt single by Crowley and a RBI double by Finan.
The visitors cut into the final score with one run in the fifth and two during the seventh.
Southeast Missouri had the tying run at first base and the winning run at the plate before Clark recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Sturgeon set a new career-high with five RBIs and finished 3-for-3 as the Bluejays tallied their 10th victory of the season and second of the weekend against the Redhawks.
Creighton is back in action next weekend when it hosts Iowa and Wichita State for the Creighton Tournament. Iowa and Wichita State will play each other to open the event on Friday at 1 p.m. before the Bluejays play Wichita State at 3:30 p.m.Â
