Chicago, Ill. -- Looking to improve its postseason hopes, the Creighton women's basketball team handled St. John's 66-58 in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, March 4.
The win boosted the Bluejays to 18-11 on the season, while St. John's fell to 16-14.
The game didn't start as planned for the Bluejays as St. John's opened the game on a 10-3 burst in the opening four minutes. Sophomore Jaylyn Agnew rallied her squad by tracking down an offensive rebound, then connecting from long range to make it 10-6 (5:07). Moments later Agnew cut the deficit to 10-8 with two free throws, then she knotted the contest at 10-10 with a driving layup.
Senior Sydney Lamberty gave Creighton its first lead at 12-10 (1:43) with another backcut for a layup. St. John's quickly answered, but the momentum had moved to the Bluejays. Agnew drilled another jumper in the closing moments as Creighton led 15-12 after the first period.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the second period, but Creighton used a late 7-0 run to push its lead to double digits at 32-22. Leading 25-22 (3:30) the Bluejays got five straight points from Lamberty, followed by a driving layup from sophomore Olivia Elger with 54 seconds left in the half. St. John's converted its final offensive possession to send the game to halftime with the Bluejays holding a 32-24 edge.
St. John's opened the third quarter quickly, just as it had in the opening frame. The Red Storm scored the first nine points of the period to claim a 33-32 lead at the 5:46 mark. Down the stretch of the third the Bluejays found their range from beyond the arc, getting critical treys from Lamberty (to retake the lead at 37-35), Agnew (to go up 40-37) and from Elger (pushing Creighton's advantage to 45-41).
Leading 45-42 entering the fourth the Bluejays extended their lead to 52-45 with just 6:19 left on two free throws from Angew, another three-ball by Lamberty and driving layup from junior Audrey Faber. St. John's had one final push as the Red Storm scored the next five points to make it a one possession contest at 52-50 (4:17).
Once more Agnew and Lamberty stepped forward as the duo delivered 10 of the Bluejays final 14 points to propel Creighton to the win.
Agnew led all scorers with 23 points, while Lamberty finished with 18. St. John's got a game-high 18 points from Maya Singleton in the loss, while Tiana England finished with 16.
