The Bluejays won at No. 1 and No. 6 singles
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Marquette during a BIG EAST match on Friday afternoon in Milwaukee.
The Bluejays moved to 7-9 overall this season and 0-2 in BIG EAST play.
The host Golden Eagles earned the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position and a 7-5 win at No. 2.
Marquette continued to control the match and built a 3-0 overall lead with straight-sets victories at the No. 5 and No. 2 singles positions. The Golden Eagles clinched the overall match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3.
Brooks Kendall gave Creighton its first win of the day with a 6-4, 7-6 triumph at the top singles position before Jose Oscar Diaz closed out the day with a come-from-behind three-set victory at the No. 6 slot. The Bluejay freshmen dropped the first set 6-2 but battled back for a 7-5 victory during the second to force a third-set tiebreaker.
"We let a couple of opportunities to keep this match closer slip away," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Marquette stepped up and took advantage when we were not able to. It was nice wins for Brooks and Jose in singles against quality competition."
"We will need to be prepared and play better tomorrow in order to put ourselves in position to beat a tough Xavier team."
Creighton continues play in Milwaukee with a match against Xavier on Saturday at 10 a.m.
